Louis Erard 78 225 AA 06 – 1931 Chronograph

by Meehna Goldsmith

Louis Erard WatchesDating back to 1816, the chronograph is one of the most useful complications in a watch even centuries after its invention. It was first developed by Louis Moinet and applied to astronomical equipment. Five years later it was commercialized by Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, who designed one for King Louis XVIII in 1821 to time horse racing.

Even though the chronograph is a sporty complication, it can exude class and sophistication. All it takes is the right design to make it a timepiece that works in both casual and business environments. The Louis Erard 78 225 AA 06 chronograph from the 1931 collection hits that sweet spot allowing it to be a versatile player in any situation.

Housed in a 42.5 mm stainless steel case, the Louis Erard 78 225 AA 06 timepiece features a rich chocolate brown dial. Brown dials aren’t commonly used, the default colors being silver, white or black. However, when the right tone of brown is chosen, it makes the watch a real standout—and Louis Erard really got this one right.

The chronograph dials are set against this beautiful brown dial with the 30 minute counter at 12 o’clock, the 12 hour counter at 6 o’clock and the crosshair running seconds at 9 o’clock. The watch’s yellow seconds hand adds nice contrast to the composition.

In the classic layout, the chronograph pushers surround the crown at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock. In addition to the chronograph function, the Louis Erard 1931 78 225 AA 06 timepiece also provides the convenience of a date aperture at 6 o’clock within the 12 hour subdial. A watch isn’t finished until it’s got a strap, which can make or break the overall look of a watch. Louis Erard chose the right tone with the brown crocodile-pattern leather strap with a steel folding clasp.

All of Louis Erard’s watches are Swiss made and the Louis Erard 78 225 AA 06 employs a mechanical automatic ETA Valjoux 7750 calibre, one of the most reliable movements on the market. Part of the fun of a mechanical movement is seeing the moving parts, and the sapphire exhibition caseback allows this pleasure.
