Then She Won the Hearts of RSW in Belarus

RSW Watches25 year old Liubov Charkashyna is already a world class athlete. The young native of Belarus began her career in gymnastics at age 9 and quickly began winning medals in major competitive gymnastics events.Liubov Charkashyna With RSW Loop Billboard By 2011 Charkashyna was at the top of her game, winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Montpellier, followed by gold, silver and bronze medals during the European championship in Minsk.

When Liubov managed to take the third place against Aliya Garayeva from Azerbaijan and returned home with the Olympic bronze in 2012, she was already regarded as one of the world’s leading rhythmic gymnasts. The grace, harmony and perseverance that this young athlete exhibited during her quest for gymnastic mastery caught the attention of RSW and their exclusive distributor in Belarus, Suisse Haus Limited.

RSW saw a young woman who embodied their brand values and asked Liubov to become their new brand ambassador in Belarus. Liubov will help RSW promote its woman’s “jewelry in motion” collection in the former Soviet republic.

RSW Pays Tribute to its 700-Year-Old Home with La Neuveville

La Neuveville Switzerland

by Adrian Herscovici

RSW WatchesModern versions of vintage watches were popular at Baselworld 2012, with updated designs, movements and features that put new spins on old favorites. RSW also delivered a vintage model – La Neuveville (pronounced in three syllables: neu-ve-ville) – but unlike others, the RSW watch was not a revised version of a previous release but a new watch to commemorate a significant time and place in history.

La Neuveville is the name of the medieval city on the shore of Lake Biel in the Bernese Jura of Switzerland. It has been home to RSW since 2002. This year La Neuveville is celebrating its 700th birthday. To honor this auspicious anniversary and to pay tribute to its current home, RSW crafted a watch with a vintage feel that also includes elements of the brand’s contemporary makeup.

The design hearkens back to mid-20th century simplicity and elegance. The case is round and polished, as is the bezel, and the dressy lugs are curved with beveled edges. The watch is three-handed with a date function at 3 o’clock. The only numeral on the dial is a raised 12 marker. Other hours are indicated by geometric tetrahedrons or “triangular pyramids,” while an understated seconds track of black indexes appears along the outside. All three hands are polished and pointed, mirroring the inward pointed tips of the hour markers. The surface of the dial is decorated with a sunray pattern, adding texture and depth without compromising the vintage minimalism. Appearance of text on the dial is also intentionally sparse, limited to the brand name, the model and the word “automatic,” referring to the watch’s inner components.

Other than the 42 mm case size, one visible characteristic reveals that this watch is not of a bygone era: RSW’s patented crank crown. This recognizable and functional feature is not only original, it appeals to anyone with a fascination for mechanical watches. To operate the crank, first unscrew the traditional crown. Once unlocked from the case, the crown and handle fold up and function as a crank by which to wind the ETA 2824-2 movement inside. The experience of winding in this manner is both visual and tactile, connecting the wearer to the all-important aspect of owning a mechanical timepiece.

The automatic version shown here has a sapphire caseback. La Neuveville is also available with an ETA 955.112 quartz movement, solid caseback and standard winding crown. Both versions can be had in stainless steel or in yellow PVD-coated stainless steel, and both are available with or without diamonds. Every La Neuveville is fitted with a smart-looking leather strap and folding buckle that is as handsome as it is debonair.

Here’s to another 700 years of La Neuveville and RSW!

Geneva Time Exhibition 2012

Article and Photography by Boris Pjanic

Every year in January, Geneva, Switzerland becomes the hub for watch dealers, jewelers, enthusiasts and collectors from around the world. Two large fairs, SIHH is primarily organized by the Richemont Group at the Palexpo Center, and GTE presents independent watchmakers and top emerging watch brands, such as Louis Erard, RSW and Saint Honoré Paris. Many regard GTE as a creativity incubator.

The bright red building that houses GTE can be seen from far away. It’s located not very far from both SIHH and Geneva Airport. There is parking by the entrance to the building, which is very convenient. Walking through the entrance, there’s a counter at the left where you pick up your entrance ticket.

One needs to obtain an invitation from one of the exhibiting watchmakers. I was lucky enough to have been invited by Quinting, an old watchmaking firm known for invisible movements. Many famous people including American presidents have worn Quinting. I know that President Bill Clinton wore a Quinting, as did UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and actor Gérard Depardieu.

RGM, one of the few American watchmakers, was also presenting their new timepieces. I had a long and very pleasant conversation about their watches with company founder Roland Murphy. The latest RGM watch is derived from an airplane clock, positioned behind the watch in the picture.

Last but not least, I discovered Reuge, a Basel-based mechanical music manufacturer who is worldwide renowned, exhibited some great pieces.

I wanted to give you a brief look at this interesting watch fair, which some consider a side event of the larger SIHH fair. However, I do not think that it’s just a side event, as there are quite a number of attractive watch presentations there. I very much enjoyed my visit to GTE.

Now, I have my sights set on Baselworld 2012 coming in March. Hope to see you there!
