Bach and Mendelssohn Called Home
Johann Sebastian Bach called Leipzig home from 1723 to 1750, when he conducted the St. Thomas Church Choir. Composer Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig in 1813. Felix Mendelssohn established Germany’s first musical conservatory in Leipzig in 1843, and Gustav Mahler completed his renowned 1st Symphony while living in the city.
