In Rockland County, Upstate New York, home to Gevril Group headquarters, a wintry mix began to fall on Saturday morning. The snow gradually intensified until it turned into a blizzard. The storm continued for around twelve hours leaving a surprising accumulation of a foot of wet heavy snow.
The rare October snowstorm impacted most of the Northeastern United States from Maine to Maryland causing millions of people to sustain damage or lose their electricity. The wet snow weighed heavily on the branches of trees whose leaves had not yet fallen, causing many tree limbs to come down and bring power lines down with them. As a result, many homes, schools and businesses, including Gevril Group, were left without power or heat, and getting around was hampered by closed roads, blocked car lanes and malfunctioning traffic signals.

The Gevril Group building had its electric power restored by Monday morning. The staff worked a full day Monday as usual, but as of this writing, Tuesday morning, many houses and businesses in the area remain dark and cold.
The great October snow storm of 2011 has reportedly been the most damaging in recent US history, but people are slowly digging out and electric power companies are rushing to restore service to their affected customers, many of whom have fled to community shelters. The only winners in this disaster are the proprietors of the booked-up inns which provide refuge for storm victims lucky enough to find hospitality.
