Fashionably Well Done, Easy to Wear
As a watch geek, I don’t necessarily need every piece to be over the top with complications. I found myself looking for a quartz watch for ease of maintenance and wear. That’s when I came across the Versace Mystique Chrono recently introduced at Baselworld 2012.
Versace watches are very fashion-forward; however, what I liked about the Mystique is that the “Total Black” chronograph model is the most sober and versatile of all the offerings. There’s a lot to like about this watch; the 43.5 mm size is eminently wearable and comfortable on the wrist. The Ronda 5030.D is about as good as it gets in the watch industry when it comes to quartz movements. Who doesn’t love having a black IP case and tachymeter scale?

The star of this piece is the carbon fiber dial. A well-executed carbon fiber dial can raise the quality of a watch build considerably by tying all of the elements together, and that is what has happened here. The silver chapter rings set in against the carbon fiber dial makes this watch visually very charismatic and appealing. Another nice touch is the carbon fiber styling being carried through onto the strap. This watch is one of those that work well with business attire as well as with jeans and t-shirt. If you want a fashionably aggressive timepiece, this is it.
The Mystique Chronograph is an example of a watch that can be fun to wear, is well-built and won’t require you to take a second mortgage to afford it.

New Louis Erard Regulator with Power Reserve Using In-House Module Introduced at Baselworld 2012

Louis Erard recently introduced at Baselworld 2012 a new regulator with power reserve as part of their Excellence Collection. You may wonder while looking at the picture below how you read the time? Well, there is an offset hour counter at twelve o’clock, a central minutes hand, and a seconds hand at 6 o’clock while the power reserve is indicated at 9 o’clock.
This timepiece comes either in steel or rose gold. I am not aware of a limited edition. It uses an in-house regulator power reserve complication. That Louis Erard is starting to create their own modules may be the beginning of something wonderful, perhaps the way to bring back history to this wonderful brand as a true watch “manufacture.”
The sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides guarantees excellent legibility. The caseback is decorated, and I would have loved to see the caseback through a sapphire crystal to admire the beautifully finished hand-wound movement. Nevertheless, this watch with its flat case sits comfortably on your wrist while providing adequate weight to make you feel that you are wearing a mechanical timepiece of Swiss manufacture.
On a hand-wound watch, I really find the power reserve complication very useful. You know when the time comes to wind your watch and will not miss it.

Louis Erard 1931 Small Seconds Debuts at Baselworld 2012

Baselworld 2012 offered the opportunity to view the latest issues of upcoming timepieces. It was especially interesting on Press Day, the day before the official start of Baselworld. My first appointment this year was with Louis Erard who was introducing several new timepieces.
One of the new watches was the hand wound stainless-steel Louis Erard 1931 Small Seconds timepiece, powered by a Peseux 7001 movement. This new watch displays hours, minutes and seconds in a 40mm flat case that lays very nicely on one’s wrist, as I found for myself when I tried it on. The watch is available with three dial options: blue, silver-toned and grey, which sit under a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The blue and the silver dial possess gilded indices, which create a very special effect. The grey dial watch, however, has silver-toned hour-markers instead.

I snapped the photos below on Baselworld Press Day 2012. You can see the grey- and silver-dial versions on the left in the second row. I have tried to capture the shiny blue colors of the blue dialed timepiece despite the adverse lighting conditions that day.
The Louis Erard 1931 Small Seconds is rounded off with a genuine leather strap. The grey dial version features a coffee-colored strap, the silver dial timepiece comes with a brown strap, and the blue dial watch sports a matching blue leather strap.
All the finishings of this understated timepiece are perfect. Spectacular New Versace Collections Bloom at Baselworld 2012

The glamour and intrigue of Versace was on center stage at Baselworld 2012 when the fabled fashion house unveiled some new and very exciting timepiece collections. Headlining the event was the new Versace Mystique Collection. Donatella Versace has taken some of the Maison’s historical motifs and iconic themes and skillfully woven them into a rich, Baroque masterwork.
With four major variations, the Mystique Collection exemplifies the careful balance of classical and modern influences that keep the Versace myth alive and vibrant. The Mystique Hibiscus line is decorated with a beautifully executed cloisonné Hibiscus flower and palm leaves. The floral motif is available in six different models, including one with a diamond set bezel. The Mystique Flora line recalls the major themes of the Versace Fall-Winter 2012 fashion shows, with stylized climbing tulips in yellow and turquoise. The 26 mm Mystique Small line add an elegant, refined look to the collection for dressy occasions, and finally the bold 43.5 mm Mystique Chrono line gives men a way to enjoy this signature new look.

The new Versace Vanity Collection was inspired by a detail on one of Versace’s signature handbags. Two metal studs used in the popular bag prominently display Versace’s signature depiction of Caravaggio’s Medusa on the beautiful crocodile pattern band. A classic “Greca” pattern dial with Roman indices complete the look.

When Salvatore Ferragamo Timepieces brought their latest collection to Baselworld 2012, the results were poetry in motion.
Idillio, the latest collection of Salvatore Ferragamo Timepieces, made its debut at Baselworld 2012. The famous Florentine fashion house describes these fabulous new timepieces as “poetical visions of the passage of time.” Watch aficionados and fashionistas alike would simply describe these watches as magnificent.
According to Paul Ziff, President of Ferragamo Timepieces for the US and Caribbean, buyers and press alike were very enthusiastic in their praise of the new Idillio Collection. Mr. Ziff stated, “We expect it to perform very well, especially in the 42mm versions which make a bold statement suitable for both men and women. The fact that it is available in either steel bracelet or strap models makes this a collection with wide appeal and versatility.”
With a dial strewn with an artful constellation of diamonds and precious stones, a Idillio timepiece is unique. The elegant design evokes a night sky glowing with stars, or perhaps the Milky Way. As a tribute to Salvatore Ferragamo’s passion for precious stones, Idillio timepieces are available in several styles, including those featuring brightly cut diamonds, blue and yellow sapphires, rubies, purple sapphires and tsavorites. Edox Swiss Watches Introduces New Models at Baselworld 2012

Edox introduced three new watches at Baselworld 2012 earlier this month, choosing to build upon its core designs by extending its existing collections. Two models in the Grand Ocean Collection were introduced along with one in the World Rally Championship (WRC) Collection.
The first novelty is the versatile Grand Ocean Chronolady from the popular Grand Ocean Collection. The Chronolady is designed for women with a sporting spirit, for whom elegance and a sense of freedom resonate. Like its Grand Ocean counterparts, the Chronolady is inspired by water sports and yacht racing. Distinctive Grand Ocean elements include the planisphere engraved on the caseback and the triple-lug design, which fastens the light, ultra-feminine white rubber strap to the aptly sized 36 mm case. The matching white dial is embossed with a wind rose – yet another detail that speaks to the watch’s seafaring origins. The Chronolady contains a Ronda 5040.B movement for the best in Swiss accuracy and is water resistant to 330 feet.

A second addition to the Grand Ocean Collection is the men’s Grand Ocean Chronodiver, a watch that retains the genetic imprints of its predecessors but also introduces something entirely new: a bezel containing both stainless steel and rubber, which not only enhances functionality by improving grip, but also creates a balance in the overall design by uniting the black PVD-coated steel case with the black rubber strap. An ebony-black dial along with silvered indices and hands augments the cohesive modern look. The planisphere on the back of the Chronodiver is different than other Grand Ocean watches in that it provides a view from the North Pole. Another notable detail is the outside of the folding clasp, which is in the shape of a porthole with the Edox hourglass logo centered in the middle. The Grand Ocean Chronodiver houses a Ronda 5040.B movement and, naturally, this diver watch offers superior water resistance to the depth of 820 feet.
The third new release is the Chronorally Automatic Chronograph, part of the WRC Collection. Edox is the official timing sponsor of WRC. Designed for drivers and motor-sports enthusiasts, the Chronorally has all of the features generally associated with the collection such as the profiled rubber strap and oversized aluminum push-button. The dial features carbon fiber and a silvered tachymeter. The Chronorally boasts an unusually large caseback window – nearly 36 mm in diameter – perfect for admiring the famous Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph watch movement inside.

Ferragamo Adds New Flagship to Popular F-80 Line at Baselworld 2012
Salvatore Ferragamo restyled their popular F-80 Collection for the 21st century at Baselworld 2012.
The celebrated Maison Ferragamo fashion house recently introduced a spectacular update to their best selling F-80 line at Baselworld 2012. These new additions to the brand’s iconic sports-luxury line feature bold new colors and an innovative use of new materials.
A dramatically restyled F-80 Carbon Fiber GMT model was unveiled at Baselworld with eight screws on the bezel securing a high-tech carbon fiber case. The new timepiece features 24-hour indications on the chapter ring along with a small seconds counter at 2 o’clock. The spectacular orange and black dial features a special day/night indicator and an extra large date window at 6 o’clock.

This high-tech carbon fiber timepiece is perfect for world travelers who need easy access to several time zones. Like all the new F-80 models, the Ferragamo F-80 Carbon Fiber is powered by a precision quartz movement and water resistant to 330 feet. An anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the strikingly graphic dial. The new F-80 Carbon Fiber is also available in two all black versions with titanium and yellow detailing.
A new edition of the popular F-80 Chronograph was also introduced at Baselworld 2012 featuring vivid yellow, blue or fuscia caoutchouc straps that are color coordinated with the hands of the watch. These exciting new 44mm quartz chronographs feature a black IP titanium case and black ceramic bezel.

Haemmer Watches Make Huge Impression at Baselworld 2012
