Fortis Introduces New Bilingual Spacematic Watch Collection

For Rocketeers and Real Life

Fortis WatchesSpacematic watches by Fortis first appeared in the 1960s as a tribute to the emergence of manned space travel, which began in 1961 when the Russians launched Vostok 1 carrying astronaut Yuri Gagarin. Less than a month later, American Alan Shepard made a suborbital flight in the Mercury-Redstone 3.

Fortis on a Russian AstronautAstronauts in the U.S. Space Program took notice of the Spacematic and chose to use it during training in the early ’60s. Spacematic watches were reliable and sturdy, and quickly became associated with space travel and the risks and rigors of astronaut life.

Modern Spacematic watches, being displayed at Couture Las Vegas, still stand out for their utilitarian construction – an appealing mix of legibility, durability and functional design. The Fortis Spacematic models pictured share a lot in common with other recent versions of the watch with one distinctive modification – the center of the dial is completely open, exposing the entire date and day wheels; both turn clockwise when they advance and align for reading at the 3 o’clock position.

Fortis Bilingual Spacematic Watch CollectionThe bilingual day wheel – characteristic of the ETA 2836-2 movement inside – offers the choice of English or German display: English for its international appeal and German for its significance in the Fortis collection, which includes German-inspired pilot watches like the Flieger Automatic Chronograph.

In keeping with the function-first personality of the watch, Fortis keeps the surrounding chapter ring relatively sparse for ease of reading and to balance the text-filled central area. Hours and minutes are clearly indicated using large Arabic numerals and a prominent minute track. An arrowhead index pointing inward at 3 o’clock specifies the line at which to read the current day and date. (This use of an arrowhead index, like the use of German as the second language, is a nod to other Fortis pilot watches where the classic arrowhead index with flanking dots appears at 12 o’clock.)

Dial contrast also plays an essential role in the Spacematic’s exceptional overall readability. Fortis offers two dial variations: black with white numerals, indices and seconds hand, or white with black numerals, indices and seconds hand. The red hour and minute hands on both models are easy to distinguish at a glance; both are filled with Super-LumiNova for good nighttime legibility.

The two-part, 40 mm brushed stainless steel case echoes the watch’s straightforward and orderly style. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal on the front and a screw-down steel caseback, which together support water resistance to 330 feet. The large knurled crown, initialed with the Fortis logo, is easy to grip to adjust the time, day and date.

Fortis Bilingual Spacematic Watch CollectionFortis Spacematic owners benefit from having the choice of several OEM straps to choose from including silicone in black, white or gray; a textile strap in black, olive or sand, or; a black leather strap. In addition, the Spacematic is available on a stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp.

Fortis Watches Go into Space

by John Sealander

Final Launch of Atlantis Space Shuttle July 8, 2011
The Last Frontier is Series of Firsts for Fortis

As the last Space Shuttle completes its final mission, Fortis continues to focus on achieving new firsts in space.

The company recently renewed it’s commitment to space exploration by sealing a deal with the Russian Space Agency’s new director, Vladimir A. Popovkin to continue supplying the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph as standard equipment to all cosmonauts and astronauts attending the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

Fortis WatchesFortis watches have been space proven since 1994 and have accumulated more time under weightless conditions than any other brand. The very first Fortis watch launched into space was a Stratoliner Chronograph powered by a Lemania 5100 movement. This watch was soon replaced by the 38mm Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, powered by the same Lemania movement. Today’s cosmonauts and astronauts receive the slightly larger 42mm B42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph.

These impressive space proven timepieces have already made over 98,000 orbits of the earth, and are well on their way to 100,000 orbits with Fortis watches on the wrists of the current International Space Station crew. The Titanium Edition of the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph was approved as the official chronograph on board the International Space Station (ISS) on July 14, 2005, and over ten years later Fortis remains the exclusive supplier for the Russian Space Agency on board the ISS.

Fortis space watches are not just commemorative editions produced in honor of space exploration. All Fortis watches featuring the “Yuri Gagarin Space Academy” logo on the back are cleared for actual use in space. Over 14 space missions have been launched since 1994 with a Fortis watch on board and many more are expected in the years ahead.

To ensure that the seIf-winding movement of the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph would maintain accurate time in space, scientists have tested it using the Gagarin Training Center’s high velocity TsF-18 centrifuge. The watch easily withstood a 12 G. load (12 times the Earth’s gravity) from three different angles with no negative effects. During the Soyuz TM-19 mission, cosmonauts wore their Fortis watches in open space during an 11 hour space walk. The Official Cosmonauts Chronograph has been exposed to temperatures as low as -170 degrees centigrade and as high as +130 degrees centigrade and kept on ticking.

Fortis Black Mars 500 Limited EditionThe Space Shuttle fleet will soon be retired, but Fortis continues to be inspired by what lies ahead in space.

It may be a long time before man sets foot on Mars, but Fortis is ready with the B-42 Mars 500 Limited Edition. The Russian Space Agency is already conducting experiments to see how future crew members will react to a simulated 520-day mission to Mars by seeing how six volunteers react to 74 weeks in confinement. During the Mars 500 experiment, each of the volunteers will be equipped with a Fortis watch.
