Couture 2013 Las Vegas Huge Success for Gevril Group

Gevril Group Couture Show 2013 Banners

by John Sealander

If you attended the Couture Show this year, it didn’t take long to discover that everything you needed to know about fine timepieces was located in the Chambertin 2 Ballroom.

Couture 2013 is over, but the glitter and shine from this spectacular jewelry and watch show will linger throughout the year. For many attendees, the Couture Show, held every year at the luxurious Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, has become the most important event on their calendar.

For Gevril Group, the Couture Show has become just as essential as the more established Baselworld show in Switzerland. According to Gevril President Samuel Friedmann, Couture is more effective at meeting the needs of North American jewelers and retailers. “This show is mandatory for American luxury retailers,” says Friedmann. These retailers certainly got a treat when they visited The Chambertin 2 Ballroom, home to Gevril Group during the five-day show.

Showcasing some of the industry’s most popular watch brands, Gevril Group’s convenient location, just a few feet away from the Couture registration desk, provided attendees with an unprecedented opportunity to discover emerging trends and hot new fashion ideas. “This was our most successful show ever,” said Gevril Executive Vice President David Yurowitz. “Customers are taking a new look at our company and are very eager to participate in all the projects and brands we have rolled out. The success of Couture 2013 was a record-breaking achievement for Gevril and we see this as a stepping stone for the future of our company.”

Paul Ziff, president of Ferragamo Timepieces in the United States, concurs. “There was a definite buzz in the Chambertin 2 Ballroom as customers and prospects gathered to view our Gevril collection of brands,” says Ziff. “The new Ferragamo Lungarno automatics and the fashion-forward Minuetto line were particularly well received by the press and retailers. Bloomingdales buyers even made a point during their appointment to say that they are very proud and excited to have just launched the Ferragamo timepiece line in eight Bloomingdales locations with more to follow.”

The Versace and Versus displays were both popular destinations for jewelers and retailers. Kari Allen, President of Versace Timepieces for the USA and Caribbean, had her best year ever at Couture. She attributes her success to the great teamwork exhibited by the Gevril staff. “It takes a lot of effort throughout our organization to achieve our goals and I very much appreciate all the support,” says Allen.

Miriam Tress, representing Gevril’s popular Fortis brand, says Gevril Group had lots to be proud of during Couture 2013. “The Chambertin 2 ballroom was exquisite and served as an impressive showcase for a wider variety of watch brands than any other exhibitor, says Miriam. “I observed a constant excitement and buzz in the air from our many current and new customers. You could see respect and admiration for Gevril Group and the values they stand for.”

From the opening night concert by popular rockers Neon Trees, to the highly anticipated Couture Design Awards, Couture 2013 was an event to savor and remember. Once again, Couture was joined by the prestigious Watch Journal to present Couture Time, a carefully curated collection of the world’s finest timepieces.

“There is no substitute for seeing, touching, and admiring one of the most diverse collections of fine timepieces available today,” says Samuel Friedmann. “People are amazed at how many fine brands we offer, and Couture gives us the opportunity to show these customers how we can help build their business, both before and after the sale.”

Las Vegas has always been known for putting on a good show, and Couture 2013 was no exception. This prestigious event has become an essential destination for anyone serious about selling luxury goods. That’s a big reason why Gevril Group plans to be back again next year.

Chronoswiss Sale Forecasts Bright Future for Fine Mechanical Timepieces

by John Sealander

Chronoswiss WatchesThe mechanical timepiece has been declared dead many times already. Somehow, despite countless “revolutions” in the watch world, these finely crafted mechanical marvels continue to survive and even thrive. Gerd-Rüdiger Lang Who Founded Chronoswiss in 1983One of the reasons that the old world craftsmanship associated with the watchmaker’s art has experienced a renaissance in recent years are men like Gerd-Rüdiger Lang.

When Lang founded Chronoswiss in 1983, he made a commitment to making extraordinary mechanical timepieces. Although this small German company only produced about 7,000 watches a year, the company quickly gained respect among collectors and among its horological peers. Chronoswiss watches became known among watch connoisseurs around the world for their exquisitely detailed craftsmanship and innovative design.

When Lang, who is now 69 years old, announced his retirement, many feared for the future of this fine company. In today’s fragile economy, there are many who no longer appreciate the value of tradition and fine craftsmanship. Luckily, wiser minds prevailed and on January 30, 2012, Chronoswiss was sold to a Swiss entrepreneurial family who will continue the 29-year Chronoswiss tradition of manufacturing fine mechanical watches at a new, well-equipped factory in Switzerland.

Watch Industry Insider Samuel FriedmannAccording to watch industry insider Samuel Friedmann, this sale is good for the entire industry. Mr. Friedmann, who also made it possible for another historic brand to survive when he acquired Gevril Horlogerie in 2001, sees the Chronoswiss acquisition as an affirmation of the continuing demand for finely crafted timepieces.

“There is no substitute for quality,” says Friedmann. “Watchmaking is an art, and companies like Chronoswiss are bringing an appreciation for fine mechanical timepieces to a whole new generation of watch connoisseurs.”

Gerd-Rüdiger Lang, although retiring from watchmaking himself, is excited about the sale of the company he created and the new opportunities it represents. To Lang, the transition of Chronoswiss to a new team of watchmakers, working in expanded and greatly enhanced facilities, will be the culmination of a dream. With this sale, Lang’s ongoing commitment to making extraordinary timepieces can finally reach its full potential.

Chronoswiss is distributed in the United States by Chronoswiss of North America.

Fossil Buys Skagen Designs

by John Sealander

Exciting New Fossil Formation Found in Denmark

Fossil WatchesRichardson, Texas based Fossil, Inc. announced on January 10, 2012 that it plans to purchase privately-held fashion watchmaker Skagen Designs for $236.8 million in a cash and stock deal. Skagen, established in the 1980’s to sell fashion watches at reasonable prices, has become an international success by capitalizing on a new generation’s growing fascination with good design and clean, minimal styles. In a world where styles are being set by objects like the iPhone and personalities like Lady GaGa, “modern” is in.

According to Fossil chief executive Kosta Kartsotis, Skagen’s clean, modern styles “have enormous potential as a lifestyle brand.” The Skagen acquisition will give Fossil, which has its roots in vintage American style, a much broader base and will help to build up its wholesale and retail distribution chain. Fossil’s last big acquisition was in 2004, when the company bought luxury watchmaker Michele.

Johan Eric WatchesWatch industry insider and owner of the contemporary Johan Eric brand, Samuel Friedmann, sees even broader implications for Fossil’s purchase of the Skagen brand. According to Friedmann, the purchase is an affirmation of the growing importance of contemporary design in the world of fashion. Modern styles used to be a small niche market in the historically traditional watch industry, but these clean, minimal designs are now attracting a much wider audience.

Skagen WatchesSkagen watches are currently available at quality retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom and many smaller stores, as well. Add a dozen Skagen company-owned stores, along with over 400 Fossil stores worldwide and the potential is not just good for the brand; it is good for the entire contemporary fashion category.

Samuel Friedmann, Owner and President of Gevril GroupSamuel Friedmann expects contemporary brands like Skagen and Johan Eric to capture even wider market share in the years ahead.

“Design esthetics are changing,” he says, “and it’s important for watch manufacturers to keep up with what is trending and be able to offer customers what they want. Fossil’s purchase of Skagen is not only good for Fossil; it is good for the industry and even more importantly; it is good for customers.”

Gevril Avant-Garde Times Square Watch to Make Worldwide Debut at Baselworld 2011

Gevril Swiss WatchesGevril, creator of avant-garde timepieces built on a rich horologic heritage dating back to 1758, will unveil the newest addition to its stellar watch collection at Baselworld 2011.

A finely tuned plan for success, coupled with an extraordinary vision for the seamless evolution within both the aesthetic and mechanical realms of fine timepiece-making, have laid the foundation of the world’s most notable watch brands. In evolving its collection over the years, Gevril has remained loyal to its aristocratic lineage by investing the time, energy and resources necessary to ensure a rare synergy between past, present and future Gevril watches.

New Gevril Times Square Watch

Continuing in its tradition of designing timepieces which exude the personality, essence and namesakes of New York City landmark locations, Gevril aptly named its new pièce de résistance Times Square.

Not one to rush a new model to market before perfection is achieved, Gevril’s Samuel Friedmann explains: “Our new Times Square has been in the planning stages for quite some time. Although I’m very fond of all of my collections, the Times Square stands as a testament to how far Gevril has come as a brand, as well as to our ability to create time tracking wonders with technical innovations that rival the finest houses of horology anywhere.”

As with Gevril’s famed Avenue of Americas Collection, the Times Square is a “statement piece” featuring a well-designed 42mm square case. Due to its size, this is certainly not a watch that will go unnoticed; however its refined character will also appeal to those searching for a somewhat more understated look. The Times Square will be available in Classic, Sport and Luxury versions and will offer the collector a choice of complications: A triple-hand automatic powered by the very popular ETA 2892A2 movement featuring 28,800 vibrations per hour and 21 jewels, as well as Big Date versions in both Classic or Sport editions powered by the new ETA 2896 movement featuring 28,800 vibrations per hour and 22 jewels.

Gevril Form Every Bit as Good as Function

Gevril has incorporated the curved case architecture of the Avenue of Americas into the Times Square creating a wonderful custom feel on the wrist; this is where Gevril excels in making form every bit as good as function. A massive curved and beveled grade “A” sapphire crystal serves as the looking glass through which all will marvel at the watch’s charismatic dial. The fit and finish are impeccable from every viewing angle and are exemplified by the Times Square‘s seamless and fluid design. The curved exhibition caseback features a laser engraved “G” logo, and the timepiece is water resistant to 5 ATM.

The Times Square Sport edition features a minimalist black and gray dial accented with contrasting markers and Arabic numerals. A curved black titanium case is married to either a matching titanium bracelet or to a contoured high quality silicone strap. In this version Gevril has expanded the Big Date window to allow for date pre- and post- views of up to 3 days.

The Times Square Luxury version is all about refinement. While possessing the same mechanics as its Sport counterpart, it breaks rank and captures the elegance of its paternal Avenue of Americas, featuring a classically decorated and textured dial, as well as exaggerated Arabic numerals.

The Gevril Times Square Collection will be available in either 316 Stainless Steel or 18K Rose Gold except for the Sport edition that will be available exclusively in Titanium. Prices will start at $3,495 and reach $24,990, depending on case metals and band. Each edition will be limited to just 250 pieces.
