Buy Fortis 2 PiNow Rolf Sachs has done it again, with a unique tribute to Pi, the mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Since the definition of Pi relates to a circle, Sachs thought that the natural shape of a wristwatch face is the perfect place to explain the concept of this famous and extremely important irrational number.

The remarkable limited edition Fortis 2π is a wearable work of art; using Rolf Sachs colorfully designed drawings to explain how mathematics brings order to time itself. The entire dial of this 42 mm black PVD coated stainless steel timepiece is fully covered with a bright white Superluminova material, highlighting Sachs’s unique interpretation of Pi 24 hours a day.

Fortis Art Edition Mattern Watch Collection

by Meehna Goldsmith

Fortis WatchesIn continual existence for over a century since 1912, Fortis specializes in watches for use in space, aviation and maritime. To hold their composure in these environments, you know these watches need to be tough.

Fortis proved the watches metal in 1994 by pushing it to the extremes of modern physics with endurance tests. This got the attention of the Star City Training Center, a Russian training facility for cosmonauts located in Star City, Russia. The organization chose the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph as part of their Official Cosmonauts’ equipment. They used the automatic watch during several missions while working inside the space station and also in the actual atmosphere of space outside the station.

From this collaboration came an evolution of the Cosmonauts watch, the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Automatic Alarm, which was a world’s first of putting together both an automatic chrono with a mechanical alarm. So reliable are these Fortis watches that they are still the official supplier to the Russian Space program on board the ISS today as well as the MARS-500 mission, which started in 2010. Therefore, the company name Fortis, literally Latin for “strong”, lives up to its billing.

Fortis Art Edition Mattern Watch CollectionIn addition to producing watches that can perform by land, sea, air and space with conventional good looks, the company has also ventured into their more artistic side by partnering with freelance German artist Michael Mattern. Though he did attend art school for a time, Mattern had to drop out due to family reasons and therefore is more or less self-trained. He developed a style that works off the basis of technical form and function logic in the school of constructivism. Considered part of the Fluxus movement, which attacked fundamental art and celebrated the creative idea, Dr. H.C. Bazon Brock called Mattern’s of the pictorial analysis of technical systems and constructive image worlds “diaphane constructivism as well as knowledge images.”

Fortis partnered with Mattern to come up with a tool watch that has artistic merit. As there are few, if any, tool watches that dare dress up artistically, the Automatic Art Edition Mattern stands in a class by itself and, in fact, could be considered part of the Fluxus movement itself.

Like all Fortis watches, the Art Edition Mattern, with a water resistance to 660 feet, is a rugged specimen capable of weathering the elements be it by land, air or sea. Since it hasn’t been officially tested in space, I can’t officially claim the watch space-ready, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

The dial of the Art Edition Mattern has a Bauhaus sensibility infused with color, specifically pops of yellow and blue. The open construction shows the date ring and rotor, revealing functionality while also contributing to the aesthetic sensibility. On the bottom of the dial is marked “Limited Edition” marking the exclusive nature of this offering from Fortis, which will only produce 2,012 of these models.

Mattern aims to depict the reality of the times using Neo-Constructivism without falling into mainstream contemporary art, and he transfers this philosophy to the Art Edition Mattern. “Experts have argued that my work must be seen as the renewal of constructivism,” he says. “I am led to agree, as the basis for my work—geometry—has been the driving force of the great Constructivists of the past, while being the core element of all technical renderings we find determining our life today.”

Fortis Art Edition Mattern Watch CollectionIn a 40 mm case and powered by an ETA 2824 automatic movement, the Art Edition Mattern comes with a screw down crown and the option of a rubber, calfskin or stainless steel band. Fortis’s partnership with Mattern proves that art can spice up the tool watch category.

The Rolf Sachs and Fortis Art Watch Collaboration

'Library' by Rolf Sachs

by John Sealander

Rolf Sachs was already famous the world over for his architectural, lighting, and furniture designs, so Fortis thought it was about time
he turned his attention to watches.

Fortis WatchesAccomplished German artist and designer Rolf Sachs is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading conceptual artists. Using his unique multi-disciplinary approach, Sachs has created an astounding body of work that includes innovative furniture and lighting designs, sets for opera and ballet productions, photography exhibitions, as well as architectural and interior design projects.

Rolf SachsThis influential artist is still active in his family’s financial business and holds a number of advisory and board-level positions. He an international board member of Sotheby’s, the Tate Modern, and is also a trustee of the London Design Museum. Since Sachs currently lives in Switzerland and is very involved in the life around his beautiful self-designed home in St. Moritz, it wasn’t long before he was noticed by Fortis.

Fortis, who is best known for their highly regarded astronaut and aviation timepieces, also has a long tradition of collaboration with well-known artists to create special, limited edition “art watches” that are based on proven Fortis mechanisms. Since Fortis had already collaborated with well-known artists like Michael Mattern and Andora, they were eager to work with Rolf Sachs to create a unique timepiece that would capture the imagination of all who wore it.

Sachs first creation for Fortis was the whimsical Fortis IQ Watch. Instead of conventional numbers on the dial to indicate the time, Sachs uses chalk marked equations. The chalkboard look is meant to celebrate the tradition of mathematicians drawing, re-drawing their complex equations on a chalkboard. With 8 o’clock written as 23 and 11 o’clock written as the square root of 121, this is mathematical humor at it’s subtle best.

Rolf Sachs’s next venture into the world of watchmaking was the breathtakingly beautiful Fortis Frisson Watch. The Frisson, which literally means chill or shiver in French, has a special finish on the mineral glass crystal that resembles an iced vodka glass just out of the freezer. Sachs wants to encourage the wearer to physically interact with the watch by wiping a wet finger over the dial or breathing on it to get a clearer view through the frosted glass.

Both of these limited edition watches were an artistic and commercial success and are highly collectible today. If you’re wondering what the fertile and highly imaginative mind of Rolf Sachs will come up with next, only time will tell.
