On display were a number of new Louis Erard introductions for 2013, including a new 1931 chronograph with a beautiful grey dial and several exciting moon phase complications. It didn’t go unnoticed that every Louis Erard watch making its North American debut at the Couture show featured a high quality Swiss made movement. The fact that some of these hand crafted mechanical timepieces retailed for as low as $700 to $900 was even more impressive to many visitors.

Louis Erard is not a large company. Last year, the company only employed 26 people including 9 master watchmakers. Quality and craftsmanship have always been more important than quantity to Alain Spinedi, but with the attention this brand received at Couture 2013, the company is bound to grow in the years ahead.

Although many now view watches as fashion accessories, there is still an appreciation for old fashion quality and craftsmanship. As many Couture visitors discovered, Louis Erard is doing a fantastic job of keeping the tradition of fine mechanical watches alive for a whole new generation of watch aficionados.

More companies are producing models specifically for women, and, the popularity of larger watches among both sexes has many women wearing watches that were once thought to be just for guys. But even with this proliferation, there is still a desire to own at least one watch that exudes femininity and articulates a classic, delicate aesthetic. One way to mix this formula successfully is to use modern quartz movements – in the case of these Romance models, a Ronda 705 – to provide accuracy and no-fuss adjustments, allowing the aesthetics of the watch to take center stage.

Three new models are available in the collection: two 33 mm diameter versions and one smaller 30 mm version. All three share characteristics including round stainless steel cases, silver-tone dials with central guilloche motifs, minute tracks with Arabic numbers, date windows at 6 o’clock and crowns set with onyx cabochons. While it is clear these watches are from the same family, their differences represent original expressions of style.

The two 33 mm models have a few key distinctions: one features Roman numerals, blue sword hands and a central second hand; the other employs gem-set hour markers, silver-tone sword hands and no second hand. On the smaller side, the 31 mm version shares some of the characteristics of its larger siblings including the blue hands and Roman numerals. Its unique attribute is its bezel, which is set with 60 full cut (0.30 ct.) diamonds.

All three employ a steel folding clasp. The watches are water resistant to 165 feet and feature sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coatings, making them appealing for daily wear or for special occasions.

Couture 2013 Las Vegas Huge Success for Gevril Group

If you attended the Couture Show this year, it didn’t take long to discover that everything you needed to know about fine timepieces was located in the Chambertin 2 Ballroom.

Couture 2013 is over, but the glitter and shine from this spectacular jewelry and watch show will linger throughout the year. For many attendees, the Couture Show, held every year at the luxurious Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, has become the most important event on their calendar.

For Gevril Group, the Couture Show has become just as essential as the more established Baselworld show in Switzerland. According to Gevril President Samuel Friedmann, Couture is more effective at meeting the needs of North American jewelers and retailers. “This show is mandatory for American luxury retailers,” says Friedmann. These retailers certainly got a treat when they visited The Chambertin 2 Ballroom, home to Gevril Group during the five-day show.

Showcasing some of the industry’s most popular watch brands, Gevril Group’s convenient location, just a few feet away from the Couture registration desk, provided attendees with an unprecedented opportunity to discover emerging trends and hot new fashion ideas. “This was our most successful show ever,” said Gevril Executive Vice President David Yurowitz. “Customers are taking a new look at our company and are very eager to participate in all the projects and brands we have rolled out. The success of Couture 2013 was a record-breaking achievement for Gevril and we see this as a stepping stone for the future of our company.”

Paul Ziff, president of Ferragamo Timepieces in the United States, concurs. “There was a definite buzz in the Chambertin 2 Ballroom as customers and prospects gathered to view our Gevril collection of brands,” says Ziff. “The new Ferragamo Lungarno automatics and the fashion-forward Minuetto line were particularly well received by the press and retailers. Bloomingdales buyers even made a point during their appointment to say that they are very proud and excited to have just launched the Ferragamo timepiece line in eight Bloomingdales locations with more to follow.”

The Versace and Versus displays were both popular destinations for jewelers and retailers. Kari Allen, President of Versace Timepieces for the USA and Caribbean, had her best year ever at Couture. She attributes her success to the great teamwork exhibited by the Gevril staff. “It takes a lot of effort throughout our organization to achieve our goals and I very much appreciate all the support,” says Allen.

Miriam Tress, representing Gevril’s popular Fortis brand, says Gevril Group had lots to be proud of during Couture 2013. “The Chambertin 2 ballroom was exquisite and served as an impressive showcase for a wider variety of watch brands than any other exhibitor, says Miriam. “I observed a constant excitement and buzz in the air from our many current and new customers. You could see respect and admiration for Gevril Group and the values they stand for.”

From the opening night concert by popular rockers Neon Trees, to the highly anticipated Couture Design Awards, Couture 2013 was an event to savor and remember. Once again, Couture was joined by the prestigious Watch Journal to present Couture Time, a carefully curated collection of the world’s finest timepieces.

Louis Erard WatchesThe moment I saw the BMC Limited Edision Chronograph on the Louis Erard website under nouveautes, I realized it was a very unique chronograph that I wanted to learn more about.

Indeed, the BMC Limited Edition Chronograph is unique. Looking closely at the tachymeter scale, you read “10 km/h,” an indication that isn’t fast enough to make sense for car racing or for other higher speed measurement. Why would Louis Erard create a timepiece with such a tachymeter scale?

The 42 mm BMC Chronograph is a timepiece that’s inspired by bicycling. Named after BMC, a well-known Swiss cycling company that makes high-end bicycles, this magnificent watch is limited to only 200 numbered pieces.

While the tachymeter scale my not be all that useful, the design of the BMC Chronograph with red accents on the black watch dial is very appealing. The watch and the day and date indications are easy to read. Additionally, the Swiss-made Valjoux 7750 is a solid and reliable automatic chronograph movement, which provides 46 hours of power reserve.

The BMC Limited Edition Chronograph offers tremendous value in its price range considering its Swiss workmanship and pedigree.

Last but not least, the inner bezel of this watch can also be used as a simple timer, as it can be rotated with an extra crown at 10 o’clock. While this crown may be positioned in an awkward place for a right handed person, I haven’t seen any better solutions for turning the bezel.
