Gianni Versace founded his eponymous brand in 1978 and the same year put on his first fashion show, which was a resounding success. Though he’s been deceased since 1997, the Versace brand still maintains the fashion forward and progressive spirit he established, now successfully guided by his sister and Creative Director, Donatella Versace. The famed and fabulous along with the general public still clamor for the Versace brand in all its forms, including haute couture, home goods, perfumes, watches and other accessories.
2014 brings a new winner to Versus watches pillar: the Coral Gables collection. Coral Gables, Florida, is known as “The City Beautiful” and the Versus Versace Coral Gables watch and jewelry collections channel this enchanting city whose architecture is almost entirely Mediterranean Revival Style, while still maintaining the rock-chic élan that defines Versus.

The Coral Gables comes in a feminine yet modern-sized 36 mm stainless steel case with a jewelry buckle. It features a stud degradé theme all over the watch, including the studs pattern on the dial and studs on the bezel and bracelet. Furthermore, the bracelet gains extra depth and detail with a raised pattern of rectangular shapes going round the bracelet between the studs.

Though the dial at first seems plain with only dauphine style hands and the Versus logo at 6 o’clock, the Coral Gables is actually a complex and well thought out design. The studs pattern on the face are in concentric circles that fan out from the center of the dial starting at the hour and minute hands, highlighting the studs marking the hour indices while at the same time drawing the eye to the studs on the bracelet. It’s a unique combination of subtle and bold that is both edgy and elegant: rock-n-roll meets sophistication.
Depending upon your preferences, the Versus Coral Gables collection comes, in addition to the stainless steel case, an option with an IP yellow gold coating and both are offered with a white or black dial. There is also a rendition of a two-tone piece with a gold dial. The come with a reliable quartz movement—and all capture that adventurous Versus Versace spirit.
