Alberto Ascari’s reputation for precision and accuracy helped make him one of the greatest racing drivers of all time. The same attributes help define the superlative Gevril timepiece created in his honor.
Alberto Ascari is a racing legend. This multitalented Italian driver was a two-time Formula One World Champion with back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953. He also won the legendary Mille Miglia open road endurance race in 1954 and even competed in the Indianapolis 500.
After his untimely death in 1955, Ascari was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and even had a street in Rome named in his honor. It is no surprise that this legendary driver became the inspiration for a unique limited edition timepiece that celebrates his racing heritage.
A masterpiece of form and function
The 48 mm Gevril Alberto Ascari is a masterpiece of Italian design and Swiss watchmaking expertise. The watch is powered by a precision Swiss made MD3G automatic mechanical movement by Ruben & Sons, the atelier of Alberto’s grandson Massimo Ascari. The movement is housed in a 316L stainless steel case. This boldly masculine timepiece features a stunning racing inspired dial that emulates the perforated brake discs found in Alberto Ascari’s Ferrari racecar.
The rotor powering this superb timepiece was inspired by a vintage Ferrari steering wheel and can be viewed through a scratch resistant sapphire exhibition back. The racing theme continues on the side of the stainless steel case with a series of ribs that are reminiscent of a racing engine’s cylinder head.
These authentic racing elements have been masterfully combined to create a unique tribute to one of the world’s legendary drivers.
Strictly limited to 500 pieces worldwide, the Gevril Alberto Ascari Limited Edition Timepiece comes in a special limited edition box, complete with a certificate of authenticity and a tribute booklet filled with images from Alberto Ascari’s storied career. Like all Gevril timepieces, the Alberto Ascari Limited Edition carries a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Most people with an eye for fine watches are familiar with Gevril’s Avenue of Americas collection, the jewel in the brand’s crown since 2001. Like other Gevril collections, these watches are named after a famous New York landmark, in this case a prominent lower Manhattan thoroughfare called Avenue of the Americas, also known as Sixth Avenue.
Until now the Avenue of Americas lineup consisted primarily of highly refined dress watches. This year, however, Gevril is adding a slightly more casual version with the introduction of the men’s Avenue of Americas Sport. Even at a distance the overall look of the watch remains unmistakable, with a rectangular curved case measuring 44 x 34 mm, large scripted numerals and art deco style.
Two variations comprise the Avenue of Americas Sport collection, each a limited edition release of 500 pieces worldwide. The first has an IP black stainless steel case; the second has an IP “gun metal” stainless steel case.
The big difference in the appearance of the Avenue of Americas Sport versus other Avenue of Americas watches is the design of the dial. Unlike previous editions that have numeral markers at every hour, the Sport model has numerals only at 12 and 6 o’clock. The remaining hour markers are represented by luminous white bars, proportional to the numerals and stemming from the dial’s circular core. An open date wheel, exposed in four sections, is the focal point. The current date is marked at 4 o’clock by a small two-prong fork affixed by way of a hexagonal screw, one of four such screws connecting the center plate above the date wheel. At the center of this plate is an engraved pattern featuring a circular web, which complements the engraved concentric ring pattern on the outer part of the dial.
The hour and minute hands are also much sportier, with wide skeletonized bodies and large luminous triangular tips that are easy to read, day or night. A red sweeping seconds hand adds a burst of color on the otherwise tonal palette.
The introduction of the Sport collection means there is now an alternative within the Avenue of Americas lineup for those who want to own a less formal version of this classic timepiece. The look is quintessential Avenue of Americas, including familiar components such as the padded leather calfskin strap with tang buckle, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and Swiss made automatic movement visible through an exhibition caseback. But the dial design completely changes its personality and adds to its versatility, making it a watch that many collectors will appreciate and want to own. GV2 is well known for its large and sturdy Swiss madesport watches that come in a variety of distinctive designs. The introduction of the GV2 Fiamme collection reveals another side of the brand: Fiamme watches maintain the sporty GV2 persona but add renewed suavity and elegance to the men’s side of the brand’s lineup.
Fiamme is the Italian word for flames, and in geology fiamme are flame-like shapes usually found in various types of volcanic rock. In the instance of Fiamme watches, however, the name echoes an attitude rather than an obvious parallel – Fiamme watches, while thinner and dressier, are sport watches at heart, each with a flare of fiery red (the crown) that serves as a reminder of GV2’s youthful individuality.
Watches in the Fiamme collection feature 42 mm square-shape cases; because the square is slightly rounded, the shape is often referred to as a “TV screen” for its resemblance to a tube television screen. All of the cases are made of stainless steel with variations in black and rose gold IP. The casebacks have multiple engravings including the GV2 logo and flame-like fiamme shapes that rise up from the lower portion of the case. The limited edition numbers (of 500) are also etched into the back, as are the model reference numbers and the words “Swiss made.” Anti-reflective sapphire crystals cover the dials and every watch in the collection is water resistant to 165 feet.
In all there are five versions in the collection: steel case and silver numerals with either a black or white dial; IP rose gold steel cases and rose gold numerals with either a black dial or a white-and-black dial, and; one version with an IP black steel case, black numerals and black dial.
The highpoint of the dial design are the oversized raised Roman numerals that broaden out from the center. A vertical ribbed pattern in the middle of the dial is surrounded by a seconds track, also in the TV screen shape. Notches in the bezel reiterate the hour markers. The pointed hour and minute hands have luminous inlays, as does the small diamond towards the tip of the second hand. The precision Swiss quartz movement inside also powers the calendar function, with day and date windows prominently displayed at 3 o’clock.
Every Fiamme model comes with a black rubber strap that contributes to the overall sporty tone. The strap is custom fitted to the case and lugs, and has a streamlined ribbed pattern through its center that unites it with the dial. The strap closes by way of a tidy push-button folding clasp. On each watch the clasp matches the case, i.e., steel clasps with steel cases and IP coated steel clasps with IP coated steel cases.
Fiamme watches are perfect for men who need a watch that has a more subdued size and shape, but who still want to signal their desire to stand out from the crowd. These masculine and versatile watches will slip neatly under a shirt during the week and transition easily to casual life on the weekend. Look up an authorized GV2 watch dealer today and pick your favorite.
The Powerball by GV2 is among the most distinctive watches on the market in any category – nothing else looks quite like it. The design combines two complementary motifs within a stadium-shape case to achieve a look that is part science fiction, part motor speedway.
One unmistakable emphasis of Powerball watches is racing sport: an axis bridge between 9 and 3 looks like a vintage race car steering wheel and the small seconds hand would surely suit the dial of a car’s tachometer or speedometer. In addition, the Powerball rubber strap features a distinctive tire-tread pattern.
The second theme is circles – hence the name Powerball – which appear all throughout the design of the watch and there are few straight lines or severe edges. It begins with the round 45 mm case and bezel. The first tier in from the bezel is a flange with globular markers. Next is the chapter ring, which has numerals at 05, 25, 35 and 55 along with circular minute markers. Moving into the central area of the dial, two date wheels are visible below the cutaway dial screen. The small seconds register is also round, as are the individual links that form the hour and minute hands.
As such, these elements are all cleverly combined, but the Powerball has an additional unifying quality – multi-dimensionality. The aforementioned layering of the dial creates a stadium effect with tiers and a declining slope towards center. This is echoed in the case design, which from its profile has the appearance of a stadium’s exterior. Not only does this case styling give the watch an original look, it means that a smaller portion of the case actually touches the wearer’s wrist, making for a more comfortable fit. The stadium shape also creates a natural projection of the fluted crown, which makes it easy to grasp for quick adjustments.
Several models of the Powerball are available. Case options are stainless steel, black PVD and one model in rose gold IP. Dials variants include models with yellow accents, blue accents and one with brown accents (exclusive to the rose gold version). Powerball watches use Swissquartz movements, have solid casebacks and are water resistant to 165 feet.
The Powerball rubber strap is available in black, blue, red, yellow or brown. The adjustable bracelet, which features removable screw links (superior to pin links), comes in stainless steel or black PVD. Both the strap and bracelet open and close by way of a high-grade, double-folding deployant clasp.
With so many details in its makeup, the GV2 Powerball is a watch worth staring at, and will undoubtedly garner some extra attention. Its multidimensional case and intriguing dial design are appealing to anyone who wants a watch that stands out for being original. This colorful and classy sport watch makes a great addition to any watch collection. Contact an authorized GV2 dealer today and pick your favorite.
Viceroy is an ambitious watch brand known for its sporty and stylish designs. The brand is also popular for infusing its timepieces with ample personality, allowing fans to express their individuality. The Rebel collection is a perfect example.
Watches in the Viceroy Rebel collection include a stainless steel model (432121-15) and a black ion-plated stainless steel model (432119-55). They two watches share several attributes in addition to square, stainless steel cases: both watches are powered by quartz movements, employ mineral glass crystals and are built to be water resistant to a depth of 165 feet. The black model is a hair larger than the steel model at 44 mm and 43 mm respectively.
These Rebels also share certain design elements, including screw heads that appear in the four corners on the front side of the case. The black version carries this detail over to the dial, using applied screw-head markers as hour counters. Both watches have skeletonized hour and minute hands with large, luminous arrowhead tips. The Viceroy logo is printed on both watches below the 12, but our attention is drawn to the collection name “Rebel Men” printed at 6 o’clock. The name appears in the collection’s signature calligraphic font; more importantly, the words are printed askew to reflect the independent spirit of the collection.
Even with these similarities, each watch has its own look. The steel model, with less black in the design and a brown leather strap, is visually layered and has more contrasting elements. It also has a date function that is practical for daily wear. The three-dimensional dial is mostly gray, with black and white elements throughout. The hour numerals are large and white except at 2, 6 and 10 o’clock, where the numerals are replaced with solid bars that have the effect of separating the numerals symmetrically into three sections of three. A handy inside track shows military hours from 13 through 24. The second hand is red with an arrowhead tip that complements the look of the hour and minute hands.
The black ion-plated model is more dominant in its appearance, which is a result of the profusion of black. The only other color incorporated into the watch is white; it is used to fill the markers on the bezel including the four points of a compass (N, S, E and W), and on the dial. The appearance of the dial is quite orderly as a result. This model has no date function. The black ion-plated Viceroy Rebel has a black leather strap with a cracked, distressed appearance, and a matching ion-plated tang buckle. Like the stainless steel model, this watch has a solid stainless steel caseback.
Timepieces in the Viceroy Rebel Watch Collection express an edgy, leader-of-the-pack outlook on life. The watches are rugged and mechanical in appearance with a contemporary design geared towards men with a daring sense of self. Men like you.
