Meccaniche Veloci Naked Watch Collection

by Adrian Herscovici

Revved and Ready for Baselworld 2014

Meccaniche Veloci Watches“Naked, in full motoring style” is the motto for a new limited edition series launching at Baselworld 2014 from Italian watchmaker Meccaniche Veloci – a brand celebrated for its motor-racing-themed watch collections. The Naked series is inspired by motorcycles from the 1990s, revered for simplicity rather than for fairings and accessories. In watch speak, this bareness or “naked” quality is expressed through skeletonizing, which is to open up areas of the dial in order to expose the movement beneath.

Watches in the Naked series are variations within three existing collections: Quattro Valvole 44 Chronograph, Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes and Due Valvole. Each of the watches in the series is available in a limited edition of 250 pieces.

Meccaniche Veloci Naked Quattro Valvole 44 Chronograph

The Naked Quattro Valvole 44 Chronograph is inspired, of course, by a four-valve cylinder typical of many high-power-output engines.

As the name suggests, the watches utilize 44 mm cases with screw-down crowns and screw-down chronograph pushers positioned off-center between 12 and 3 o’clock. The movement in these models is an ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic with a 12-hour totalizer at 4 o’clock, 30-minute totalizer at 10 o’clock and running seconds at 8 o’clock. Since the chronograph only requires three sub-dials, a fourth sub-dial is positioned at 2 o’clock to complete the four-valve theme; it presents the brand’s signature, consisting of Meccaniche Veloci, its gear logo and the words “Swiss Made.” A date window appears at 3 o’clock. The watches are mounted on black rubber straps and feature sapphire crystals.

The model pictured has a black IPB-coated titanium case and red chapter ring. A taupe-colored engine-like bridge design connects the dial elements. Below the bridge is a carbon-fiber plate, except in the center of the dial where a partial view of the movement is exposed.

Meccaniche Veloci Naked Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes

The second watch in the series is the Naked Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes, an offshoot of the Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes watch design. The name refers to a four-stroke engine design, with dials that look strikingly similar to cylinder heads from four-valve engines.

These watches are housed in large 48 mm cases, and for good reason: each watch contains four modified ETA 2671 automatic movements, which means the watch can track four time zones independently – essentially, a triple GMT.

Three of the sub-dial clocks are skeletonized; the fourth has the brand’s signature printed on an overlay. The clock at 8 o’clock is the only to feature a seconds hand – the other three are hours-and-minutes only. The clock at 10 o’clock displays military time. A screw-down crown in each quadrant controls each clock sub-dial independently. The sporty finish includes a black rubber strap and sapphire crystal.

The model pictured features a natural titanium case and silver, carbon-fiber dial.

Meccaniche Veloci Naked Due Valvole

Third in the series is a Naked version of the Due Valvole collection. The Italian words mean “two valves” in English. In keeping with this name, the watches feature dual independent sub-dial clocks: one with a 24-hour reading and date, the other with hours and minutes.

The Naked Due Valvole uses two ETA 2671 small automatic movements, each with its own crown on opposite sides of the case. Both of the sub-dial clocks expose partial glimpses of the movement. The clock in the northeastern quadrant utilizes the full capability of the ETA 2671, i.e., hours, minutes, seconds and date. Curiously, the date wheel is almost fully exposed with no reference pointing to the current date. The user is left to choose the reference point, although using the number 15 on the hour ring is most logical. Like the others in the series, the Naked Due Valvole watches have decorative-bridge designs in taupe or gray and carbon-fiber backgrounds of silver or black. They feature sapphire crystals and are mounted on black rubber straps.

The model pictured is the version with a black carbon-fiber dial and natural titanium case.

Just as the Meccaniche Veloci brand was inspired by the world of motors and racing, so too is this new series of watches. The brand’s passion for industrial-themed design, combined with Italian creativity and high-quality components, results in the Naked series – revealing and revved-up creations from the masters of high-octane watch design.

The Innovative Meccaniche Veloci Chrono Driver Evo Watch

by John Sealander

Leave it to Meccaniche Veloci to Introduce the First
Real Improvement to the Driver’s Watch in 75 Years

Meccaniche Veloci WatchesThe driver’s watch first gained popularity in the late 1930’s. These innovative designs featured curved cases that were designed to be worn on the side of the wrist, instead of on top, like a normal wristwatch. This unconventional configuration placed the dial in line with the base of the thumb, so drivers could easily read the time without turning their arm or letting go of the steering wheel. Although wearing a watch on the side of your wrist felt strange to many, racing drivers loved these innovative timepieces because they made rally timekeeping extremely quick and convenient.

Meccaniche Veloci Chrono Driver Evo Watch - Dial ViewOver time, wearing a watch on the side of your wrist fell out of fashion and drivers watches began to emulate the style that aviators preferred, with extra large, simple round dials worn on top of the wrist. To make these conventional displays more readable while driving, manufacturers often re-oriented the dial so that twelve was in the normal 3 o’clock position.

Meccaniche Veloci is one of few manufacturers to recognize the wisdom of the original driver designs that manufacturers like Gruen and Hamilton pioneered in 1937. Instead of wearing the watch on the side of your wrist, they have developed a unique gimbaled brancard mounting that allows the entire case to be quickly and easily rotated to various angles by the driver for optimum visibility under any driving conditions.

The revolutionary Meccaniche Veloci Chrono Driver Evo Watch that was introduced at Baselworld 2013 gives today’s drivers the best of both worlds. Like early driver’s watches, the dial can be easily tilted to provide drivers with a perfect viewing angle without taking their eye off the road or their hands off the wheel. Like today’s popular driver styles, the Chrono Driver Evo has an oversized, clearly readable dial with full chronometer functionality.

To facilitate timing rally events, Meccaniche Veloci has positioned the Chrono Driver Evo’s chronograph pushers on either side of a top mounted winding crown at 12 o’clock. This practical configuration makes it much easier for drivers to start and stop the chronograph while driving. With a large red sweep second hand, a chronometer minute counter at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 3 o’clock, and a small continuous seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, this remarkable watch is well equipped for timing events of almost any duration.

Meccaniche Veloci Watches Unique Appeal at Couture 2013

by John Sealander

How Meccaniche Veloci Wowed Crowds at
Couture 2013 Las Vegas with Only One Watch

Meccaniche Veloci WatchesAlthough Meccaniche Veloci is a relatively new name to most American jewelers and retailers, it’s a name that few will forget having visited the Meccaniche Veloci display at Couture’s Chambertin 2 Ballroom. These handcrafted Italian masterpieces are produced in very limited editions and evoke the excitement and speed of European motor racing at it’s very best.

According to Meccaniche Veloci’s Monica Banon, who flew in from Italy for Couture, these iconic timepieces have always had a strong appeal with watch aficionados who appreciate great industrial design, watchmaking innovation, and the world of speed.

What appealed to the crowd at Couture 2013 was something totally unique to the watch industry: a collection of fine timepieces, each produced in an edition of one. Every watch in the exclusive Meccaniche Veloci “Only One” collection is literally one of a kind. To produce these unique and extremely exclusive timepieces, each watch is constructed using recovered materials from the world of speed. For example, a dial might be fabricated from the fiberglass fairing of a well-known championship racing car, or perhaps from the magnesium flap from a supersonic fighter jet.

When a suitable part has been located, areas of interest are identified and then individually unique dials are cut from the material. Customers can select a specific area on a faring or wing for their own one-of-a-kind dial. Since exotic materials like carbon fiber and magnesium are difficult to cut and machine, only a few of these exclusive timepieces are ever produced.

Monica Banon says that this unique concept has proved very popular in countries like Japan and Turkey, adding that a jeweler or watch retailer in these countries might buy an entire recovered fender or wing, so they would have the opportunity to sell the entire production run of twenty to thirty watches. The recovered racing item, complete with the circular holes where material has been removed to make a dial, is often displayed in the retailer’s window to demonstrate the authenticity of the “Only One” concept.

One-of a-kind watches aren’t the only things that Meccaniche Veloci is famous for. Racing inspired designs like the Quattro Valvole 48 Four Strokes, 44 Chronograph, Due Valvole and the exciting new Chrono Driver are also produced in limited numbers for discriminating watch aficionados. Fans of this unique brand often say that Meccaniche Veloci is the first watch that truly reflects their personality.

These beautifully engineered watches will never be produced in large quantities, but if the crowds at Couture 2013 are any indication, they will soon have a much larger fan base. There was a lot of buzz about Meccaniche Veloci at this year’s show. The brand has managed to do something truly unique, and visitors to the Chambertin 2 Ballroom knew it. In a world where exclusivity is appreciated and even revered, an entire collection of one-of-a-kind timepieces is something very special.
