Versace is a huge powerhouse of a fashion brand, headed up by Creative Director Donatella Versace. After her brother and founder of the company Gianni Versace died, she took over the reigns. This month Complex Style reprinted an enlightening interview between actress, singer, songwriter and rapper Nicki Minaj and Donatella Versace in Interview Magazine in December 2011. Minaj asks some hard-hitting questions and Donatella answers very candidly.

Gianni Versace’s death was a huge blow to the family and Donatella admitted that she was totally destroyed but had to be strong, not only for her children, but also for the company and the people working for it. She credits her brother with teaching her to be bold, sensual and fearless. In homage to him and his legacy, she had to at least try to go on.

Versace was one of the first brands to embrace hip-hop in the 1990’s and still incorporates elements of that music world into its products, especially clothing. When Nicki Minaj pointed out that American rapper, The Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls, gave a boost to the company, because he used to talk about Versace in a lot of his songs — and even wore their clothes in his videos — Donatella said that he was definitely one of the reasons the public became more aware of the brand. She remembers seeing him at her shows in Paris. She had such a respect for his intellect and mind.

In 2011, during the time when this interview took place, Versace clothing had started to take off again—partially thanks again to the rap music industry. Rick Ross and Drake started wearing Versace’s trademark gaudy silk shirts and even Minaj made Versace her designer of choice.

Donatella Designs ‘Versace Loves Brazil’ World Cup 2014 Shirt

Gianni Versace knew his sister Donatella had the chops and instincts to be a great designer when he invited her to join him at his eponymous company. He had so much faith in her that he gifted her the Versus category, a more affordable extension of the haute couture lines which she turned into a resounding success. After Gianni’s untimely death Donatella took over as Creative Director of the company and she’s been rocking it ever since, expanding the luxury brand into areas such as watches, hotels, home goods and accessories. Versace products are coveted worldwide.

Never one to back away from a challenge, Donatella has thrown her hat in the ring with other brands, designing a shirt in honor of the 2014 World Cup, which is an international football (known as soccer in the United States) association competition that was established in 1930 and awards the prestigious Cup every four years. The Cup is one of the most viewed sporting events with over 700 million people estimated to watch the final match.

Named ‘Versace Loves Brazil’, the World Cup t-shirt designed by Donatella features classic Versace style with a Brazilian flair. Of course the iconic Medusa head is incorporated into the design as the centerpiece of the shirt surrounded by silhouettes of footballers, footballs and flowers. Distinctly baroque, the print uses Brazilian carnival colors that include hot pinks and vivid oranges. In addition to the iconic Medusa head, Versace is also known for gold chains and leopard prints, which all make an appearance in the design.

No matter what the occasion, Donatella Versace knows how to capture the spirit in the Versace vein. This shirt for the 2014 World Cup is no exception and exemplifies her great talent. It will be a hit for both Versace and World Cup fans.

Donatella Versace Goes Home With Her New Collection

Donatella VersaceDonatella first started to expand the Versace brand when her brother Gianni, the founder of the company, gave her the gift of creating the Versus collection in 1989, a fusion line that she gave a rock-chic style. A fusion line is a less expensive version of the brand that still contains all the inherent DNA and desirability of the haute end items. Take, for example, that J.Lo wore a dress from the Versus collection for her comeback new single in the music video “I Luh Ya Papi”. Other celebrities such as Miranda Cosgrave and Leighton Meester have also swathed themselves in Versus Versace. In addition, the Versus collection hangs alongside the signature collection in retail locations.

Donatella, as Creative Director of the company, has continued to add categories to the Versace name, such as perfumes, hotels, jewelry and watches. Another extension is a Home Collection, and Versace has just released a new one called Via Gesù that models itself on the Palazzo, considered the It-bag, and debuted at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

Donatella likes to stir things up, especially in her collections and that’s why they’re so popular, exuding a fearless and bold style. The Via Gesù Home Collection is equally provocative with sensuality as a major theme. For example, a baroque jacquard-upholstered sofa is called the Sextional, comprised of cushy cubes wrapped in colorful Versace baroque jacquards.

Of course, the characteristic symbols of Versace, the Medusa and the Greek Key, abound in the offerings in Via Gesù. Other pieces in the collection include a sofa with a Versace V sloping from the arms that contain secret drawers and have a Medusa head at the base; a dining table whose wooden legs remind of the architecture of the Via Gesù palace, highlighted by a new textile collection with neoclassical images alongside a view of the Palazzo Versace courtyard; the Duyal armchair and sofa decorated with African animals; and, the Zarrin armchair and sofa in leather reminiscent of a desert sunset.

A unique dial with an eye-catching geometric pattern anchors the design. Four crystals located at 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock represent the hour markers, while dauphine style hands circle the dial to show the time. Donatella is a fan of sumptuous details and the enamel Versus logo on the dial located at 12 o’clock is proof of that. As part of the composition, two Versus logos embellish the polished steel bezel swooping opposite each other from the top and bottom in a symmetrical flourish.

What Makes Donatella Versace Nervous?

Strong, talented, bold and innovative—these are all words that describe Donatella Versace, sister to fashion genius Gianni Versace who founded the eponymous company. When Donatella, who is the Creative Director of Versace, whisks into a room, she does so with confidence and aplomb. It doesn’t seem like anything could make this woman miss a beat.

But there is one thing that does get her heart racing and that’s New York Fashion Week. It’s here in front of all the discerning and critical eyes that Donatella presents her designs on the catwalk. After all the hard work of conceptualizing and executing and adjusting each piece, there’s the moment of truth. Will the critics be thrilled with the collection upon its unveiling, or will they be left disappointed.

Whatever their opinion, it is trumpeted across all media outlets. It’s understandable that the merit of a year’s worth of work decided in just a few minutes would be a stressful endeavor. But then there is satisfaction and elation when all goes well. Ultimately, Donatella thinks the pressure is worth it.

Another aspect of New York Fashion Week Donatella doesn’t take pleasure in is all the parties and socializing that go along with the event. Well, she enjoys going to some of them, she just doesn’t want to feel obliged to go to all of them, which is part of the game. And yet, there is the diva aspect of it all. Donatella admits she’s been designated a diva and she does enjoy acting up the role—just when and where she wants to.

The flamboyant and avant-garde Gianni Versace established his house in 1972 by going big, just like his personality. He elevated vinyl baby-doll dresses, bondage gear and togas from low class clothing to high fashion runway attire.

Not only was Versace known for his trailblazing clothing but also what he did to change the atmosphere of fashion in general. He assembled an entourage of high-profile people and celebrities around him so that there was an air of excitement wherever he went. He also turned the business of fashion into an elite and exclusive world separated from everyone else with the desire to belong. Perhaps one of the most significant things Versace did was change the landscape of the fashion world by creating the supermodel. He paid astronomical sums to people like Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.

Lead designer and Versace’s sister, Donatella Versace craves the good old days of the supermodels, those big personalities with ego and presence. She thinks the current crop of models is all bland and lumped together without being differentiated. She pines for the environment where Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell ruled, demanding huge salaries to strut their stuff on the runway. It was a competitive landscape where established models didn’t like the entrance of an interloper. As Donatella says, when Kate Moss first booked her Avedon shoot, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell wanted to protect their turf.

Donatella sums her views up best when she said to LOVE magazine, “There is not enough ego! Now is a bad moment. They are like robots. Now we need something. We need a special personality. We need to feed the egos of these girls. Somebody like Kristen McMenamy who had a huge ego. Beautiful.”

Just like Donatella herself, she wants more flash and attitude to once again come into the fashion scene.
