by John Sealander

Watch Aficionados Will be Jumping For Joy
When They See This New Fortis Complication

Fortis WatchesFortis has a long-standing tradition of creating unique and original timepieces. The company has collaborated with leading artists and architects to create limited edition “art watches,” as well as developing its own imaginative ways to indicate the time. This year, a brand new innovation will join a growing list of unique Fortis complications when the company introduces the new F-43 Jumping Hours watch at the Fortis Dorint Hotel Basel exhibit, around the corner from Baselworld 2013*.

Fortis F-43 Jumping Hours Watch CollectionThe Fortis F-43 Jumping Hours watch is based on the proven Fortis F2024 automatic movement that powers several other illustrious Fortis watches. This precision mechanical movement also powers another Fortis watch with a jumping hour complication: the popular B-47 Mysterious Planets Timekeeper.

Fortis F-43 Jumping Hours Watch

The F-43 Jumping Hours watch comes in two versions: one with a black dial inscribed with hypnotic concentric white circles, and a skeletonized dial that reveals the jumping hour wheel and mechanism. Both versions of the Jumping Hours watch use the same movement and feature a jumping circular disc at 12 o’clock to indicate the hour. Minutes are indicated more traditionally, using a central minute hand. The beautiful minimal design is both innovative and easy to read.

The 43 mm stainless steel timepiece features a fluted screw-in crown, a scratch resistant sapphire crystal and an impressive water resistance of 656 feet. The black dial version is equipped with an integrated solid stainless steel bracelet, while the skeletonized version has been equipped with a beautiful black leather strap that has been specially fitted to the case.

Other Fortis Art Watches

Fortis Sponsors Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team

Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team

The Elegance and Precision of the Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team Is a Thing of Beauty, So is the Watch They Depend On

Fortis WatchesSwiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatic Team, View From the AirIt comes as no surprise that Fortis timepieces have been designated as official equipment for the elite Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team. Fortis has been a favorite of aviators and astronauts since they began manufacturing their first precision chronographs in the 1930’s. Cosmonauts and astronauts still receive a Fortis watch as part of their official space equipment when they complete their training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia. Many air force squadrons around the world have also turned to Fortis for timekeeping solutions. Fortis even has a special squadron program and allows flying squadrons to customize a Fortis timepiece with their own official insignia.

With its rich heritage among pilots and aviators, Fortis was proud to sponsor the prestigious Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team and provide them with the accurate and reliable aviation timepieces they depend on. As ambassadors of the Swiss Air Force, the PC-7 Aerobatics Team demonstrates the elegance and beauty of precise formation flying at its very best. Nine fighter pilots, each flying a Pilatus PC-7 training aircraft inspire hundreds of thousands of spectators every year with a program of exciting maneuvers and stunts, all executed while flying only a few meters from each other.

The precision maneuvers performed by the PC-7 team require exact timing. That’s why the team relies on timepieces that have a reputation for providing aviators with exactly what the need. The Fortis B-42 and B-47 Collections have been a favorite of pilots for many years and the all-new Fortis F-43 Collection is proving equally popular with a new generation of aviators.

The PC-7 “Flying Diamond” team has inspired countless young people to pursue a career in aviation themselves. The nine Swiss pilots, the Swiss made Fortis timepieces they depend on, and the Swiss made Pilatus PC-7 aircraft they fly are all a testament to Switzerland’s unique ability to bring quality, precision, and craftsmanship to the world. Fortis is proud to be a part of this illustrious team. Over 100 years after it was founded by watchmaker Walter Vogt, Fortis continues to set the pace for other watch companies to follow.

Fortis — 100 Years of Variety and Quality

Fortis 100th Anniversary 1912-2012

by William Moss

Fortis Watches: Adventurous and Artistic

Fortis WatchesFortis was established in 1912 and is now in the process of celebrating 100 years of history. Fortis has always been known for making a quality product, using the best materials combined with an eye for the creative. Fortis has done a wonderful job using accent colors and designs on their dials, as well as being consumer-friendly by offering private label customization. The quality of the dial workmanship has always been first class. What exemplifies Fortis’ dedication to quality and artistic variety is a pair of 100th anniversary limited edition models: the Fortis B-47 Big Black and the Andora.

Fortis B-47 Big Black Limited Edition

I have always been a fan of well-made sports watches. If you like a timepiece that makes a strong statement, the Fortis B-47 Big Black is for you. The 47 mm black PVD case is brushed and eye catching; the rubber strap screws into the lugs fitting up against the side of the case. Even the screws are PVD-coated — a nice touch. The 120 turn ratchet bezel is aggressively oversized making it easy to use even while wearing gloves. The star of this piece, however, is the dial. Black and transparent, it covers a day-and-date set of sub-dials with cut-outs at 9 for the day and 3 for the date.

What sets this all-black watch aside from most others is that the hands and the day date function are easy to read because of an ample coating of Super-LumiNova. In short, if you are looking for a well-built all black sport watch which will attract attention, the Fortis B-47 Limited Edition has your name all over it.

Fortis Andora Emotions Limited Edition

The Andora Emotions Limited Edition offering by Fortis is what truly sets them aside from other brands. Fortis commissioned the pop artist Andora to apply his impressionist art skills to design a watch which could be used to celebrate their 100th anniversary.

True to form for both the artist and the brand, there was no shortage of color and detail to this piece. This automatic chronograph with a Valjoux 7750 movement is also one of the latest editiosn to the Fortis Art Edition Series. Pop art is not my domain; with that said, I find the watch visually interesting, including the sub dials. Each time you look at the watch, your eye drawn to something different. The use of color works well and is not overbearing. One appreciates the thoughtfulness in bringing the art work onto the bracelet. As a watch geek, the rubber pushers and crown are nice accents that point to the quality of the build. The brushed case and bracelet set up nicely against the vibrant art work on the dial. The 42 mm case is an excellent choice, making the piece easy to wear and display.

If you like well-made timepieces that will pique the interest of both art and watch aficionados, this watch is for you. This Andora Limited Edision will be equally at home displayed in a winding box on your mantel as it will be on your wrist.

With the issuing of the B-47 and the Andora, Fortis has shown us what the brand has stood for since 1912: the quality of the build, the range in styling and the uncompromising willingness to be creative. It’s no surprise that Fortis is celebrating its 100th birthday. One hundred candles — that’s one big birthday cake!

Fortis B-47 Big Black Watch Wins Good Design Award

by John Sealander

The Fortis B-47 Big Black Limited Edition 2012 makes a big splash at the world’s most prestigious design awards.

Good Design AwardsThe Good Design Awards, founded by world famous architects Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames in 1950, has long been considered the “Oscars” of industrial design. Thousands of companies from over 38 different countries compete for these prestigious awards every year and the winners represent the most visionary and innovative product concepts the world has to offer.

Fortis WatchesIt’s probably no surprise to watch aficionados that Fortis found itself in the winner’s circle in 2011. Fortis already has an enviable reputation for technical innovation and design excellence. When the Good Design Award jury awarded the Fortis B-47 Big Black Watch the Good Design Award for Personal objects, it only confirmed what Fortis owners already know: Fortis timepieces have always been about good design.

When Fortis managing director Peter Peter and his team initially conceived the Limited Edition Big Black Watch, they knew that a “stealth” watch makes no sense if it isn’t fun and it isn’t legible. Although the 47mm Big Black is large and a bit menacing, with its black PVD case and unidirectional rotating bezel, it is also eminently practical and extremely well designed.

Fortis Mens 675.18.81 K B-47 Limited Edition 2012 Big Black Watch

A semi-opaque black dial partially reveals the Swiss ETA 2836 movement’s automatic day/date discs, while highlighting the current day and date with a bright white readout at 3 and 9 o’clock. The large, skeletonized white hands instantly indicate the time, without covering up too much of the fascinating looking dial. Although the indices are a stylish matt black on this stealthy design, the chapter ring has clearly marked Super-LumiNova hour markers for easy visibility day or night.

Unlike some stealth watches, which are virtually unreadable, the Fortis B-47 Big Black Watch is a practical tool that just happens to look great on your wrist. The trend-setting B-47 features a scratch resistant, anti reflective sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 660 feet. The PVD coated stainless steel case has been fitted with a comfortable black caoutchouc strap that perfectly complements the stealthy design. Production on this amazing award-winning timepiece has been limited to 2,012 pieces, to commemorate the historic 100th Anniversary of Fortis in 2012.

If you’d like to wear the watch that caught the eye of the world’s top designers, contact your authorized Fortis dealer immediately and reserve your B-47 Big Black Watch today.

Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets Limited Edition Watch Collection

by Boris Pjanic

Fortis WatchesFortis B-47 Mysterious Planets Limited Edition Watch CollectionThe 100th anniversary of Fortis Swiss Watches in 2012 will soon be upon us. Fortis is bringing us a marvelous new watch collection to celebrate its centennial and to remind us of the brand’s longstanding association with astronautics and space exploration. The Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets Collection, with it truly unique design, is inspired by the mystery of our planetary system. Since Fortis partners with the Russian Space Program, it is understandable that they would create such a timepiece.

Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets Limited Edition Collection

The stunning dial layout of the Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets timepiece is like nothing you’ve seen before. The “jumping” hours of the B-47 Mysterious Planets has been achieved through the cooperation of its genius architect and the skilled Fortis technicians. The watch’s automatic movement and rotating dial generate an ever-changing look as the day progresses, and the hour numerals appear unexpectedly and coincidentally every hour in one of the five dial windows which represent the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Jupiter in their orbits around the sun. This amazing feature distinguishes the B-47 Mysterious Planets from all astronomical timepieces produced by other watchmakers.

Fortis Mens 677-20-31-L01 B-47 Collection Mysterious Planets New Limited Edition Black Dial Watch Fortis Mens 677-20-35-M B-47 Collection Mysterious Planets New Limited Edition Blue Dial Watch

The Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets is available with a blue dial (677.20.35) or black dial (677.20.35). Personally, I prefer the blue dial, because in my mind the sky is blue, and that’s my mental reference point in connecting to the universe, knowing all too well however that a true look into space would be as black as it can get. The black dial timepiece may fit better to a suit. while the blue dial watch will most likely catch more attention. The B-47 Mysterious Planets, limited to 500 pieces, can be obtained with either a steel bracelet, leather strap, black rubber strap or blue silicone strap.

Fortis B-47 Mysterious Planets Limited Edition Watch CollectionI’m confident that this timepiece will be a great conversation starter, since it reflects a very avant-garde design and only its minute hand brings to mind the classic watch face. How exciting it must be to look at a watch changing its face throughout the day, which in my mind is a reflection of our times, when change has become a constant force. Kudos to Fortis and the B-47 Mysterious Planets Collection for expanding our imagination.
