GV2 Montreux Chronograph Collection

by John Sealander

Inspired by a city known for music, this innovative, classically styled chronograph strikes just the right note with watch aficionados.

GV2 WatchesLocated on Lake Geneva, Montreux, Switzerland is one of the world’s most picturesque and sophisticated cities. Montreux is synonymous with music and is home to the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Igor Stravinsky, Ian Anderson and Freddie Mercury have all called Montreux home. It is fitting that one of the most beautiful GV2 timepieces ever produced takes its name from this fabled Swiss city.

The 44 mm GV2 Montreux is spectacular. This superb limited edition chronograph features a unique chronograph movement that takes timing events to a new level. In watch mode, the hands function as any three-hand configuration timepiece. In chronograph mode, the three hands turn into hour, minute, and second totalizers. Even more amazingly, the big date display becomes an accurate 1/100 of a second totalizer. Two well-placed pushers and a multi-function crown control this high-tech masterpiece. Once you get used to the accuracy and versatility of this innovative timepiece, you never go back to conventional chronographs.

The beautiful textured dial is engraved with an intricate guilloché pattern with two large date wheels that rotate in opposite directions, revealing the date through a whimsical brass plate at 6 o’clock. Traditional blued Feuille hands, a fluted onion crown, and a functional tachymeter scale on the chapter ring complete the inspired design. The beautiful Montreux chronograph is available in four variations. The Collection includes stainless steel, IP rose gold, and IP yellow gold models that can fitted with a choice of a luxurious black or dark brown patterned leather strap.

Powering the GV2 Montreux is a customized Swiss made Soprod FM13D quartz movement that sets new standards for analog display timekeeping. An anti-reflective, scratch resistant sapphire crystal protects the beautiful dial. Protecting the high-tech movement is a durable stainless case with a professional screw down case back that is water resistant to 165 feet. Like all GV2 timepieces, the Montreux Collection carries a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Harrison Ford Chooses the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Watch for Ender’s Game

by John Sealander

When Harrison Ford needed a space proven timepiece for his role as Colonel Gaff in the science fiction thriller Ender’s Game, he picked a watch that has actually been there.

Fortis WatchesEnder’s Game, scheduled to be released in theaters throughout the United States on November 1, is the story of a young boy who has the future of the entire human race on his shoulders. When Earth is invaded by a race of aliens called the Formics, it is decided that the best hope for survival lies with child prodigies like Andrew “Ender” Wiggin who have been trained from an early age in an elite battle school orbiting the earth to command the earth’s international fleet in a desperate battle for survival.

It’s Harrison Ford’s job, in his role as Colonel Gaff, to train the young Andrew Wiggen to master a series of increasingly difficult war games and fulfill his destiny as a military leader who will be the supreme commander in a war that will determine the future of Earth and the human race.

Since much of the action in this exciting thriller takes place in a space station orbiting high above the earth, it was no surprise that Harrison Ford chose to wear a genuine space proven timepiece for his role as the tough, self-reliant teacher who trains the young Ender in the art of war. The watch you see on Ford’s wrist is the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Watch.

This legendary Fortis watch has been subjected to some of the most rigorous endurance tests ever conducted and has been officially certified by Fortis for manned space flight. Dr. Ulf Merbold, a German physicist and astronaut, first wore the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph in deep space during the joint German/Russian Euromir space mission, and the watch continues to be a familiar sight on the ISS space station today.

Fortis space-proven timepieces have already made over 98,000 orbits of the earth, and are well on their way to 100,000 orbits with Fortis watches on the wrists of the current International Space Station crew. In a future world where people like Colonel Gaff are orbiting the earth in a sophisticated battle station designed to train young warriors like Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, it is likely that these space travelers will be wearing Fortis watches as well.

Hannes Bodensorf Wins a Ride in Space Courtesy
Of Fortis With His “Zero-G Seniors” Video

Fortis WatchesTo celebrate their 100th Anniversary and 20 years of going where no watch has gone before, Fortis invited artists and watch enthusiasts from around the world to participate in the world’s first Zero-G Space Art Contest. Contestants were encouraged to submit original drawings, photos, paintings and videos that expressed the artist’s thoughts and feelings about space and space travel for a chance at an out-of-this-world prize.

After a seven-month search for the best entry, Fortis announced a winner on June 25, 2013. As a result of his winning entry, a video called “Zero-G Seniors,” Hannes Bodensorf, a native from Zerbst, Germany, will now have the opportunity of a lifetime to experience the feeling of weightlessness on board a special weightless parabolic aircraft flight that simulates the sensations of orbital flight.

Hannes will join scientists from the German Sport University of Cologne in the South of France this September on board a specially equipped Zero-G aircraft to explore the unique and unforgettable sensations of weightlessness. To help pass the time until his historic flight, Hannes was presented by Fortis with the world’s most celebrated space watch: the Fortis Official Cosmonaut’s Chronograph. This is the same watch worn by astronauts on the International Space Station and has proved itself under weightless conditions many times already.

Paolo Marai Vertime CEO on Future of Watch Industry

Vertime CEO Paolo Marai with Gevril President Samuel Friedmann and Jon Luigi

by John Sealander

Few Know More About Watches than Paolo Marai
And Paolo Marai Thinks the Future Looks Bright

It’s hard to find a more knowledgeable representative of the watch industry than Paolo Marai. Paolo is President and CEO of Vertime and is responsible for some of the world’s most recognizable watch brands, including Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Versus.

Mr. Marai is very positive about the future of the watch industry, but he sees a major shift occurring in how timepieces are perceived and used. Interviewed during a visit to the prestigious Couture 2013 Watch and Jewelry Show in Las Vegas, Marai said, “More and more, watches are no longer used for timekeeping functions, they are becoming accessories, which means that the brand and the design are becoming more relevant than what is inside the watch.”

Working closely with top designers like Donatella Versace, Marai is bringing this philosophy to customers; with some of the most innovative, fashion-forward designs the watch industry has ever seen. Mr. Marai says that sometimes it takes up to a year, working with fashion superstars like Donatella, to finalize a new design, but that the wait is worth it. “There is a new generation and a new type of consumer,” says Marai. “I believe the future will be based more on fashion brands, rather than on traditional watch manufacturing.”

To meet the needs of these new fashion-forward customers, Paolo Marai is taking Vertime boldly into the future with a new emphasis on fashion and style. From the edgy youthful spirit of Versus, to the luxurious opulence of Versace, and the refined, subtle elegance of Salvatore Ferragamo, Vertime is meeting the desires of fashionistas and watch aficionados alike with fabulous new timepieces designed for the 21st Century. What will this watchmaking power player do next? You’ll probably see the answer on a fashionable wrist in the very near future.

Fortis Receives Congratulations From Space

Fortis Receives Congratulations From Space

by John Sealander

You Know you’ve got a Winner When
Three Astronauts Congratulate you From Space

Fortis WatchesFortis has been involved with developing timepieces specifically designed to withstand the rigors of space travel for over forty years. In 1994, the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph Automatic became part of the regulation equipment handed over to cosmonauts before each launch. To this day, every cosmonaut and astronaut who goes through the training program at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia receives a Fortis watch as part of their official space equipment.

Unlike some “high performance watches,” a Fortis space watch is the real thing. Fortis watches have been into orbit many times and to this day are still the only official timepieces of the Russian Space Program. To celebrate the company’s long and illustrious involvement with manned spaceflight, astronauts Oleg Novitsky, Evgeny Tarelkin and Roman Romanenko recently sent their congratulations to the Fortis team for a job well done directly from the International Space Station.

This special message in honor of the Fortis 100 Year Centennial also included the presentation of a special flag of the Russian Federation, complete with the signature and stamp of the International Space Station. This special flag will occupy a place of honor at the Fortis Museum when the astronauts return to earth. The astronaut’s Fortis watches will occupy a place of honor as well: on their wrists!

Fortis Sponsors Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team

Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team

by John Sealander

The Elegance and Precision of the Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team Is a Thing of Beauty, So is the Watch They Depend On

Fortis WatchesSwiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatic Team, View From the AirIt comes as no surprise that Fortis timepieces have been designated as official equipment for the elite Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team. Fortis has been a favorite of aviators and astronauts since they began manufacturing their first precision chronographs in the 1930’s. Cosmonauts and astronauts still receive a Fortis watch as part of their official space equipment when they complete their training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia. Many air force squadrons around the world have also turned to Fortis for timekeeping solutions. Fortis even has a special squadron program and allows flying squadrons to customize a Fortis timepiece with their own official insignia.

With its rich heritage among pilots and aviators, Fortis was proud to sponsor the prestigious Swiss Air Force PC-7 Aerobatics Team and provide them with the accurate and reliable aviation timepieces they depend on. As ambassadors of the Swiss Air Force, the PC-7 Aerobatics Team demonstrates the elegance and beauty of precise formation flying at its very best. Nine fighter pilots, each flying a Pilatus PC-7 training aircraft inspire hundreds of thousands of spectators every year with a program of exciting maneuvers and stunts, all executed while flying only a few meters from each other.

The precision maneuvers performed by the PC-7 team require exact timing. That’s why the team relies on timepieces that have a reputation for providing aviators with exactly what the need. The Fortis B-42 and B-47 Collections have been a favorite of pilots for many years and the all-new Fortis F-43 Collection is proving equally popular with a new generation of aviators.

The PC-7 “Flying Diamond” team has inspired countless young people to pursue a career in aviation themselves. The nine Swiss pilots, the Swiss made Fortis timepieces they depend on, and the Swiss made Pilatus PC-7 aircraft they fly are all a testament to Switzerland’s unique ability to bring quality, precision, and craftsmanship to the world. Fortis is proud to be a part of this illustrious team. Over 100 years after it was founded by watchmaker Walter Vogt, Fortis continues to set the pace for other watch companies to follow.
