Fortis 597.20.92 M Flieger Chronograph

by Adrian Herscovici

One Refined Flieger

Fortis WatchesFortis pilot watches debuted in the 1980s and helped define a new generation of functional timepieces, with a distinct style that combined 40 mm cases and black dials, along with green tritium luminous material applied to large hands and hour markers. The result was sturdy, sober and legible watches designed for professional pilots. The inherent attraction of no-nonsense tool watches quickly extended beyond the world’s high flyers (fliegers), and Fortis pilot watches began appearing on the wrists of the populace.

Buy Fortis 597.20.92 M Flieger ChronographThe new Fortis limited edition Flieger Chronograph 597.20.92 M is a sophisticated variant of the award-wining models in the current collection, with a tonal scheme reminiscent of watches in the brand’s current F-43 series. The Flieger Chronograph maintains all of the desirable qualities of an effective pilot’s watch but offers a few refinements that make it more subdued, and more elegant.

The case retains the 40 mm size of the original offerings and utilizes a combination of brushed and polished steel. The sturdy interlink bracelet closes by way of a fold-over clasp. (The watch is also available on a black padded leather strap.) Polished steel chronograph pushers flank the large, fluted and domed crown, which is designed to be easy to clutch and operate. The sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating and the watch is water resistant to 330 feet.

Subtleties include thicker, softer outlines around the sub-dials and skeletonized hands with luminous tips. The dial’s creamy shade of beige is well coordinated with the blue and black details. All in all, these changes ease the watch’s tough and purposeful appearance without sacrificing legibility, which so defines the Fortis Flieger’s history.

GV2 9101 Astor Women’s Watch

Astor Place Theater

by Adrian Herscovici

Manhattan Chic

GV2 WatchesNew York’s Astor Place is a short but busy crossroad in the heart of lower Manhattan connecting Broadway, Lafayette and Cooper Square before merging into East 8th Street and St. Marks Place. Astor Place was named after John Jacob Astor, a successful furrier, real estate mogul and patron of arts and culture.

The Astor limited edition women’s watch collection by GV2 is a tribute to Astor and his influential life as a prominent New Yorker. GV2 Astor watches represent refined urban versatility for the modern woman. They are watches designed with classic elements and overtones, fine enough to wear in formal environments, but equally appropriate for casual settings thanks to their chic and durable cases.

Each stainless steel Astor case is a contemporary 40 mm in diameter. The GV2 9101 Astor’s case, interlinked bracelet and push-button deployment clasp are coated in IP yellow gold. The bracelet’s relative narrowness of 18 mm amplifies the case size. The round bezel immediately stands out with its array of 50 genuine diamonds. Because the bezel is wider at the sides and narrower at the top and bottom, the illusion of an oval shape is created. The diamonds are placed accordingly: lined up in a single row at the top and bottom, and offset in two rows where the bezel widens.

The crown is in the shape of an onion bulb, both tasteful and workable, with a decorative blue sapphire cabochon. The blue is picked up again in the small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, which has a centrally mounted blue hand atop engraved concentric rings. Large Roman numerals and cathedral hands on a silver dial round out the traditional facade.

  • Stationary stainless steel bezel, 50 genuine diamonds around bezel

If a strap is preferred over a bracelet, the Astor also comes with an interchangeable white leather strap that takes the watch in a dressier direction. Astor watches have anti-reflective sapphire crystals, reliable Swiss made quartz movements and water-resistance ratings of 99 feet.

Astor watches offer a tasteful balance of sparkle and discretion. Whether it’s for a sophisticated night out at one of the theaters around Astor Place, or for a quick dinner in the East Village, an Astor watch is a splendid accompaniment to any urban style and lifestyle. This stealthy masterpiece covertly tells the time while keeping its namesake’s clandestine secrets safe.

GV2 WatchesWith its sophisticated black-on-black design, the Swiss made GV2 9700 Aurora tells the time on a need-to-know basis. Inspired by the super secret US military Aurora project, this 45 mm, IP black, 316L stainless steel timepiece exudes an aura of mystery. Luminous, skeletonized hands and raised silver indices clearly indicate the time without attracting undue attention. A semitransparent screen on the all-black dial partially reveals a bilingual date wheel below, while two well-positioned windows at 3 and 9 o’clock clearly indicate the correct day and date.

Adding further functionally to this inspired military design is a rotating, all-black aluminum bezel with tactile knurled edges and raised numbers. This unidirectional bezel functions as a practical tool for timing dives and other events, while remaining virtually invisible on the wrist.

Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger Big Day Date Watch

by Meehna Goldsmith

Fortis WatchesGermany’s aircraft developers commissioned the popular and beautifully constructed Flieger watch, German for flight, during World War II for German bomber pilots. Also known as Beobachtungs-Uhren or navigators watches, they had to meet stringent standards for visibility, durability and accuracy. Despite the less than auspicious reasons for the creation of the Flieger watch, it resulted in a functional timepiece of enduring design.

Buy Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger Big Day Date WatchThe Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger Big Day Date, produced in a limited edition of 2,012 pieces, is a modern interpretation of the original Flieger watch, incorporating all of its best elements while accommodating it for civilians. According to German specs, two dial configurations were acceptable. The Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger is inspired by the Type A, which has a much cleaner layout. Large illuminated white Arabic numerals sit on a black sunray embellished dial surrounded by a white baton minute track that also references the time in 24-hour increments. The Fortis emblem and crown are situated below the 12 o’clock position.

Characteristic of all pilot watches (and really a must), the Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger uses an illuminated triangular marker surrounded by two illuminated dots to represent 12 o’clock. The reason for this original design choice was so pilots could orient the watch at night. While some Flieger watches update the hands, the Fortis 700.10.81 L.01 F-43 Flieger keeps the illuminated sword shaped configuration with the hour hand thicker to differentiate it from the minutes hand. Fortis added a convenient modern touch to the dial with the big day at 9 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock. Mirroring the triangle at 12 o’clock, another resides along side the date, which works for both functionality and aesthetic purposes.

The Flieger watches used by the German bomber pilots were huge, clocking in at 55 mm. This was because they housed hand wound pocket watch movements. This size worked because a larger movement gave more space on the dial, which translated into more visibility, but also because the watches had to strap over a bulky flight suit and not get lost in the material.

Since a 55 mm watch is not realistic or practical for daily wear, Fortis placed the F-43 Flieger 700.10.81 L.01 in a 43 mm stainless steel case that hits the sweet spot for contemporary watches. A black calfskin strap with contrast stitching attaches to the case and secures with a deployant push button clasp.

One of the most crucial elements of a pilots watch was accuracy. Known for their robust and precise movements, Fortis placed a Swiss automatic movement with a shock absorber in the Fortis F-43 Flieger 700.10.81 L.01, which is on display through the exhibition caseback. As moisture is one of the most dangerous enemies of a movement, the watch is water resistant to 660 feet.

At the end of their tenure, German bombers had to give back their Fliegers to the Luftwaffe. Luckily you don’t have to do that with the Fortis F-43 Flieger 700.10.81 L.01. It’s yours to keep. Purchased your Fortis F-43 Flieger from an authorized Fortis dealer.

Louis Erard 78 225 AA 01 – 1931 Vintage Chronograph

by Adrian Herscovici

A Fitting Salute to 1931

Louis Erard WatchesIn 1931 Louis Erard and his eponymous Swiss company began making watches. Eighty years later the brand introduced its 1931 collection to pay homage to those early days. The 1931 collection includes watches that illustrate much of what was important to the brand then, and now: they balance tradition, sophistication and dependability. The Vintage Chronograph Reference 78 225 AA 01, a limited edition of 500 pieces, is a fine example.

Buy Louis Erard 78225AA01 1931 Vintage Chronograph WatchLouis Erard uses mechanical movements in its watches. The Vintage Chronograph contains the Swiss made ETA Valjoux 7750. For anyone unfamiliar, the 25-jewel Valjoux 7750 is among the most widely used automatic chronograph movements today. It operates by way of a three-cam system (as opposed to a column wheel) and is noted for being reliable and easy to service. In addition to the chronograph function, it features a quick-set day and date.

To get a glimpse of the 7750 in action, simply turn the watch over: the movement, including the customized oscillating weighted rotor with Geneva Stripes decoration, is visible through an exhibition caseback. The caseback also features the watch’s limited edition number (008/500) engraved into the case.

Configuration of the sub-dials is characteristic of the 7750 movement, with 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers at 12 and 6 o’clock respectively, and a running small-seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The day and date apertures appear at 3 o’clock.

The dial itself is balanced, tasteful and well detailed. The use of railroad-track-patterned rings is both visually stimulating and useful in delineating the sub-dials; i.e., the small-seconds track has 60 indexes whereas the indexes of the chronograph sub-dials are spaced wider apart to record minute and hour increments; the dial’s outer track measures passing minutes and chronograph seconds. Serifed Arabic numerals, blue hands and arrowheads add strong vintage appeal.

A few modern attributes indicate that this Vintage Chronograph is in fact a contemporary piece. For one, the stainless steel case is 42.5 mm in diameter (vintage watches are typically smaller), and the crystal is sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Elegances include curved and polished lugs, a polished bezel and crown, and polished caps on the chronograph pushers. The attractive black leather padded strap features cream stitching and a prong buckle.

Louis Erard delivers each of the 500 Vintage Chronograph watches in a special presentation box that includes a seal, sealing wax and vintage stationery.

What remains in this discussion of the Vintage Chronograph Reference 78 225 AA 01 is its cost, and the good news is that Louis Erard is committed to offering its watches at affordable prices. Even with its value-added refinements and Swiss made automatic movement, the Vintage Chronograph can be had for a lot less than you might think. Contact an authorized dealer today to inquire.
