Gevril 2405L Gramercy Men’s Automatic Yellow Gold Brown Leather Watch

by Meehna Goldsmith

Gevril WatchesHere’s a handsome chap from Gevril officially called the Gevril 2405L Men’s Gramercy Automatic Yellow Gold Brown Leather Watch. If you’re familiar with Gevril, you’ll know that every model in the line is named after the Big Apple. What better city to inspire a watch’s aesthetics and spirit.

The Gevril 2405L Gramercy takes its name from the area in Manhattan referred to as Gramercy Park because of the 2-acre park that defines the neighborhood. Originally enclosed in 1833, actual construction of the surrounding homes on the lots didn’t begin until the 1840’s. An interesting fact is that it’s the only private park in New York City reserved for people owning property surrounding the park. They pay an annual fee to get a key that unlocks the environs inside. The general public isn’t allowed in; however, they can gaze upon the beauty as they jog or walk on the sidewalk that surrounds the park—and it is a popular place to find joggers and strollers.

Gevril made a good choice giving the Men’s Gramercy Automatic Yellow Gold an affiliation with the exclusive park because indeed the watch has an old world rich and upscale feel. The white watch dial features a regulator configuration. A regulator setup separates out the hours, minutes and seconds onto separate indicators. This configuration was first used at the end of the 17th century to give watchmakers an accurate reference to regulate their watches. Minutes took center stage as the most important element, since at the time, technology didn’t allow for accuracy down to the seconds. That’s why the minutes are the largest indication going around the outside of the dial and the easiest to read at a glance.

In a 40 mm 18K gold round case with faceted lugs, the Gevril 2405L Gramercy separates the hours indicator at 12 o’clock balanced by the seconds indication at 6 o’clock. As described above, the timepiece follows the historical layout of the regulator configuration with the minutes hand the largest feature as it circles the dial. Because of the advancement of watch technology, you can be assured that the Gramercy will be within seconds of accuracy. As a bonus, you can view the automatic movement ticking away through the exhibition back. Finishing off the look is a brown calfskin strap with a gold buckle that beautifully complements the gold case.

Gevril 5850 Men’s Serenade Dual Time Zone Automatic Watch

by Meehna Goldsmith

Gevril WatchesIn the Gevril watch collection, each pillar pays tribute to New York City. For the Avenue of Americas, it’s the long street that winds its way all through Frank Sinatra’s town. The Gevril Serenade 5850 model features the characteristic Deco styling with the wrist hugging case and curved dial with the jaunty scripted Arabic numerals marking the hours. However, more than just one watch, the Serenade qualifies as two.

In addition to keeping time where you are, the Serenade will also let you know what time it is in London or Hong Kong or whichever city you choose for your second reference. One of the most practical of all complications, the two time zone watch comes in handy for travelers, business people and those with family in other parts of the country or world. Instead of counting the time difference on your fingers, just glance down at the Serenade before you make that phone call to ensure it’s a convenient time for your recipient.

In a luxurious 18K white gold rectangular case with 44 x 34 mm dimensions, the Serenade 5850 features a gorgeous dial decorated with 18K white gold numerals. While the majority of two time zone watches mark the second location with just another hand concentric to the hour and minutes hands, the Serenade goes the extra distance in both functionality and design. An elegantly designed skeletonized blue second time zone hand links to a day-night indicator at 9 o’clock so there isn’t any guessing whether or not it’s 12 o’clock in the afternoon or it’s midnight. Another day-night indicator at 3 o’clock for the first time zone adds convenience as well as balancing out the design.

The white disk in the corresponding windows indicate daytime, while the blue disks indicate nighttime. Every detail is considered with convenience in mind. A pusher on left side of case at 10 o’clock clicks the skeletonized second time zone hand into the correct position so you can adjust the hour before you leave for the airport or as the jet’s wheels touch down on the ground. Conveniently, the date at 6 o’clock orients you to which day you’re in because what use is the time if you’ve got the date wrong.

While sometimes watches with a lot of complications on the dial can come off as messy and hard to read, the layout here is easy on the eyes to catch the desired information at a glance — which is the ideal situation. The Gevril Serenade 5850 is limited to 50 pieces and comes with a Louisiana crocodile bracelet with an 18K gold deployment clasp buckle.

Powered by an automatic movement with a 40-hour power reserve, the Serenade 5850 is right on key no matter what part of the world you’re in.

Gevril Mens 5006A Avenue of Americas Limited Edition Blue PVD Automatic Watch

by Adrian Herscovici

Gevril WatchesThe Gevril Avenue of Americas series of timepieces has long stood as the brand’s flagship collection, with its handsome mix of New York inspired contours and classic 1930s art deco styling.

The latest variation – Reference 5006A – furthers this persona but struts out a jazzed up case color that is more befitting of an evening at the Village Vanguard than a day in your average Sixth Avenue boardroom – and it’s all about blue.

There is no question that blue is popular in watchmaking. An overview of new watches released at the Baselworld fair over the past couple of years reveals several blue variants from brands both large and small; but, usually it’s the dial that gets the blue treatment. In the instance of the 5006A, it’s the case.

Sure, Reference 5006A has the unmistakable characteristics of its Avenue of Americas predecessors including the 44 x 34 mm rectangular and slightly curved case, known both for its style and comfort. The unmistakable addition is the blue PVD coating applied to the bezel, crown and buckle. The dial and strap are dark blue to match. The overall effect is to add a contemporary and playful note to what is otherwise a purely sophisticated collection.

Other qualities the 5006A shares with previous editions include a guilloche pattern across the entire dial surface and scripted numerals, which in this case are white. The contrast between the numerals and dial provides excellent legibility. The characteristic cathedral-style hands are luminous and the second hand has a skeletonized arrowhead.

The caseback is a mix of polished and brushed 316L stainless steel, affixed by eight screws. An exhibition window provides a clear view of the movement rotor, which is decorated with Geneva stripes and personalized with the Gevril logo. Each caseback is individually engraved with the limited edition number – the Gevril Avenue of Americas Reference 5006A Automatic is a limited edition of 500 pieces. The blue PVD crown is initialed with the Gevril logo while the blue PVD buckle is initialed with the Gevril name.

The 5006A is three-handed with a date function, as determined by the ETA 2892 movement inside; simply put, the 2892 is one of the most serviceable automatics available today. The watch is water resistant to 165 feet and the crystal, both front and back, is sapphire.

Gevril 2002 Columbus Circle Astrological Symbols Dial Watch

by Adrian Herscovici

A Landmark Achievement

Gevril WatchesEssential watch collections in the Gevril brand lineup are named after famous New York City locales. These include Times Square and the Avenue of the Americas, the brand’s signature collection. The newest Manhattan landmark to be venerated by a Gevril watch collection is Columbus Circle.

The look of the Columbus Circle watch is inspired by the famous Columbus Circle roundabout intersection located at the southwest corner of Central Park outside of the Merchant’s Gate. At the intersection’s center is a commemorative monument, erected in 1892, honoring the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas.

The watch’s dial design, with its series of concentric rings and wheels, is indeed reminiscent of the W 59th Street intersection. At the center is a stationary, silver-colored circular plate featuring the astrological symbols for the days of the week that, much like Columbus Circle (the point from which all official distances from New York City are measured) is the watch’s epicenter. Each astrological symbol matches up with its day of the week on the corresponding ring.

Dial arrangement is strongly based on the configuration of the watch’s ETA 2834/2 movement with a couple of key modifications: first, the open date wheel is modified so the orientation of the numbers is in a vertical position at 12 o’clock (two red lines flank the current date), and second; the days of the week typically printed on the day wheel are replaced by a red diamond that moves one increment daily to indicate the current day; the day names are instead printed on an adjacent stationary ring.

The 316L stainless steel case is 45 mm in diameter with a black PVD-coated bezel, which pairs well with the black calfskin strap. The crown, personalized with the Gevril logo, is also coated with PVD as is the strap buckle. The watch is water resistant to 165 feet and the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective.

A commemorative caseback features an engraved scene of streetcars rolling through Columbus Circle as it appeared at the turn of the century. A small porthole offers a peak at the movement. The caseback is affixed by four screws and has additional engravings including the individual watch number – Model 2002, pictured, is a limited edition of 150 pieces.

Gevril Mens 5022 Avenue of Americas Automatic GMT Watch

by Adrian Herscovici

Functional Art for the Business Traveler

Gevril WatchesLike New York City, the Gevril Avenue of Americas Reference 5022 has plenty of international flair, steeped equally in artistic tradition and modern refinements.

The Gevril watch captures the essence of the art deco period with its architecturally inspired motifs and bold, precise shapes. A clean combination of polished 316L stainless steel with black and silver dial elements is sophisticated and stylish. The prominent, geometric case is 44 mm long by 34 mm wide to ensure both wrist presence and a tailored look. For further comfort, the case is slightly curved so that the watch fits both small and large wrists with equal aplomb.

From bold, scripted silver numerals to raised and recessed delineating lines between the sub-dials, the dial is a melting pot of textures. Other highlights include guilloche and an ornamental molding around the date window. The cathedral-style hands, coated in luminous paint, further the watch’s art deco appeal.

In addition to refined styling, the 5022 – one of the models in the GMT Power Reserve Collection – is especially befitting of the business traveler. The watch has three complications: a GMT, a power-reserve indicator and a date display. The GMT allows the wearer to keep track of the time in a second time zone, usually home, while the central hands and date are set to the current location. To minimize the chance of the watch running down and stopping, the power-reserve indicates if it needs winding. The watch has a power reserve of 40 hours when fully wound.

Driving the 5022 is Gevril’s 25-jewel, GV AOAX32 automatic movement consisting of a modified Soprod 9035 (base ETA 2892-2), with decorated bridges and a customized rotor that can be observed through the exhibition caseback, which is fastened by eight screws. Both the front and back crystals are made of scratch-resistant sapphire and the watch is water resistant to 160 feet.

A black Louisiana crocodile-leather strap is an impeccable match, attached elegantly to the lugs with custom screws. The tang-style buckle is personalized with the Gevril name. The Gevril Avenue of Americas Reference 5022 is limited to 500 pieces worldwide.

Gevril Men’s 5850 Serenade Dual Time Zone Watch

by Adrian Herscovici

Gevril’s Sensational Ensemble

Gevril WatchesJacques Gevril traveled to Spain with watchmaking partner Pierre Jaquet-Droz in 1758, carrying an assortment of musically themed complicated clocks and watches to present to King Ferdinand VI. The king was mightily impressed and bought everything the two men carried. Jaquet-Droz returned to Switzerland while Gevril was appointed Spain’s royal watchmaker, based in Madrid, where he resided for many years thereafter.

Had the Gevril Serenade 5850 existed more than two centuries ago, it might have been the legendary watchmaker’s ideal timepiece during his Spanish sojourn. A traveler’s watch at heart, the Gevril Serenade 5850 from the Gevril Avenue of Americas Collection features a dual time-zone complication with day-and-night indicators and a date function. The primary time zone is represented by central second, minute and hour hands, all in white gold; the hour hand of the second time zone is blue and skeletonized, which is an effective juxtaposition.

Gevril Mens 5850 Serenade Dual Time Zone Automatic Watch

Each of the time zones has a corresponding day-and-night disk that indicates if it is daytime or nighttime in the respective time zone – the white part of the disk indicates a.m. hours, while the blue part denotes p.m. hours.

Deco styling is a signature aspect of the Avenue of Americas collection, and the Serenade encapsulates the best of the art movement’s qualities. The 44 x 34 mm curved, rectangular case and bezel in 18K white gold are a dapper duo. The dial, also curved, features a profusion of silver guilloche, while the Arabic scripted serif numerals, also in 18K white gold, add a glamorous splash. The watch’s functions are purposeful, and inside, a modern mechanical engine with a 40-hour power reserve keeps it beating – indeed, a sensational ensemble.

The use of precious metal is not limited to the case: the Serenade 5850 houses a 22-jewel automatic movement with a guilloche-engraved 23K white-gold rotor, visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback. The black Louisiana crocodile-leather strap fastens by way of a folding deployment clasp, also made of 18K white gold.

The Gevril Serenade is also available in 18K rose gold or platinum. All three versions are limited to just 50 pieces worldwide.
