by John Sealander

BaselworldIf you manufacture, market, buy, or sell watches, Baselworld is the most important event on your yearly calendar. Every Spring, thousands of companies from around the world gather in Basel, Switzerland to showcase their latest creations and learn from each other. At Baselworld 2012, over 100,000 visitors attended this unique event where visitors have the opportunity to speak face-to-face to the owners and chief executives of top brands. Quite simply, Baselworld is where business is done. It is where trends are created, and it is where watch industry professionals make the contacts that can take their brands from obscurity to worldwide fame.

To maximize the many opportunities available at this important event, Samuel Friedmann led a full complement of Gevril Group brand managers, buyers, senior executives and designers to Baselworld 2012. According to Mr. Friedmann, a presence at Baselworld is critical to the success of any brand and an important component of the Gevril Group’s marketing plans. RSW Introduces New Watch Collections at Baselworld 2012

RSW at Baselworld 2012

by Adrian Herscovici

RSW, a brand known for atypical, futuristic and conceptual watches pays homage to its hometown of La Neuveville with one of three new watch collections at Baselworld 2012.

RSW WatchesLa Neuveville, the medieval city located on the shore of Lake Biel, is the home of RSW. To celebrate the city’s 700th anniversary in 2012, RSW introduces the city’s watch namesake, La Neuveville, a vintage-style dress watch featuring the RSW patented fold-out crank crown on the automatic model with an ETA 2824-2 movement and a traditional crown on the quartz-powered model with an ETA 955.112 movement. The case is available in steel or steel coated with yellow PVD. There are three dial variations: white, black and an exceptionally elegant sunray pattern in gray.

The newest model in the RSW High King collection, which features classic watch complications, is The Regulator. The hours and minutes are, of course, separate, as the complication dictates: a Roman-numeral counter at 12 o’clock tracks hours while the long minute hand stems from the central pivot. Different case and dial combinations are available. Each features the RSW patented fold-out crank system. The movement is an automatic RSW 1912 ETA based Dubois Dépraz 14070.

In the Urban Contemporary line, RSW takes its ultra-solid Diving Tool above ground with the Diving Tool Camo Limited Edition. Like every RSW Diving Tool, the watch retains its water resistance to 980 feet and has a screw-down crown. The movement is an automatic ETA 2824-2. The dial comes in two versions, Woodland (green) and Oceanic (blue) –- available in solid steel or in PVD-coated steel. Each combination is limited to 49 pieces. The watch comes packaged in a special case that includes a camo-style Swiss army knife and both a rubber and NATO strap.

Four New Roamer Collections Debut at Baselworld 2012

by John Sealander

While others strive to reinvent themselves at Baselworld, Roamer continues to define what the words “Swiss Made” really mean.

Roamer WatchesFor over 120 years, Roamer has set the standards for Swiss quality by combining traditional Swiss craftsmanship with contemporary innovations. A quest for quality drives every decision that comes out of the company’s Solothurn, Switzerland manufacturing facilities. For decades, Roamer’s expert watchmakers have shown a passion for detail, and their love for their craft shows every time the company introduces a new collection at Baselworld.

At Baselworld 2012, Roamer’s unique ability to synthesize traditional Swiss values with the desires of today’s consumer has never been more apparent. This year four new collections, the Dreamline, the Vanguard, the Ceraline Saphira, and the Mercury make their debut at Baselworld, and all of them show that true Swiss made quality of Swiss watches never goes out of style.

The new Roamer Dreamline Collection has been created exclusively for women. Any woman who wants a touch of glamor in her life will appreciate the delicate clean lines of this glamorous new Swiss made quartz timepiece with its 42 sparkling crystals inset in the bezel.

The Roamer Vanguard is an instant classic with its carefully placed small seconds display artfully offset between 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock on the dial. This timeless design, available in several colors with a choice of straps, features a large date display at 6 o’clock and is perfect for both dress and casual occasions. The slim 42mm timepiece is water resistant to 30 meters and like all Roamer timepieces, is fitted with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

The new Roamer Ceraline Saphira demonstrates Roamer’s expertise with new and unconventional materials. This modern, minimalist design features a spectacular integrated bracelet made of stainless steel and matte finished ceramic material. Three graceful Dauphine hands provide the perfect contrast to the dramatic black dial with its oversize date window at 6 o’clock. The entire effect is of time in perfect balance.

No Roamer collection would be complete without a precisely crafted mechanical watch. The new Roamer Mercury Collection is a classically styled timepiece that evokes the simplicity and elegance that Roamer timepieces have always been famous for. With a high quality Swiss made ETA 2824 mechanical movement and an easy-to-read three-hand day/date display, this 41mm timepiece will quickly become an essential part of any watch lover’s wardrobe.

Gevril Columbus Circle Limited Edition on Display at Baselworld 2012

Columbus Circle in 1913

by John Sealander

It’s about time that New York’s most prestigious neighborhood inspired a watch worthy of its name.

Gevril WatchesColumbus Circle is at the epicenter of everything that makes New York great. Central Park, Lincoln Center, Broadway, and some of the most exclusive shopping in Manhattan are all located with walking distance of this historic monument, which was erected on the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in the Americas.

It is only fitting that master watchmaker Gevril, which has named each of its exclusive collections for well-known Manhattan locations, is now honoring Columbus Circle with a fabulous new timepiece that bears the name of this major landmark marking the spot where all official measurements of New York City are measured.

Gevril Columbus Circle Collection at Baselworld 2012

The Gevril Columbus Circle, like it’s New York namesake, is where another important official measurement will soon be made. This spectacular 44mm timepiece is how watch aficionados will soon be measuring the time!

Each watch in the Columbus Circle Collection features a beautifully unique dial that incorporates the seven astrological symbols for the days of the week. This easy-to-read dial is available in several color combinations that show both day and date at a glance using one of the most artful presentations ever produced in a modern day timepiece.

Gevril Columbus Circle CasebackOn the back of this unique watch is a commemorative engraving of the statue of Christopher Columbus at the center of Columbus Circle, along with the limited edition watch’s unique edition number.

Powering this beauty is an ETA 2834/2 movement, based on the famous ETA 2824-2. This 25-jewel Swiss-made movement uses a hand-decorated Gevril rotor that is visible through a special porthole on the commemorative caseback.

The watch is sculpted from a block of solid 316L surgical stainless steel and features a scratch resistant, anti reflective sapphire crystal.

Like all precision Gevril timepieces, the production of the landmark Columbus Circle Collection will be strictly limited. According to Gevril founder Samuel Friedmann, the person who wears a Gevril watch wants something unique that is not over distributed. If you would like to be one of the lucky few to wear a Gevril Columbus Circle, contact your authorized Gevril dealer immediately. These fine timepieces are destined to be as exclusive as the shops that surround this watch’s New York City namesake.

Pre-Baselworld 2012 Impressions

by Stephanie Grayson

BaselworldI can feel the excitement in the air here at the Baselworld 2012 watch and jewelry fair as the many watch brands continue to set up their booths. Every floor of every building is buzzing with activity and noises of hammering and drilling. There’s also the occasional sound of the ringing bell as the concession cart passes by as it makes its rounds. You can purchase an espresso and buttered pretzels if, of course, you’re willing invest six CHF for the experience.

There’s much work yet to be done to ready all the booths, but ready or not, the press preview is March 7, the day before Baselworld 2012 officially opens. The media will have an opportunity to view all the booths before the general public. There seem to be as many exhibit designs as there are timepiece styles, and the decor of the booths is really very creative. Although not permanent structures, many of the luxury booths have a very well-established fine look. I find it interesting to “watch” and see how each of the booths look once completed.

Meccaniche Veloci Due Valvole Debuts at Baselworld 2012

by John Sealander

The evolution of Meccaniche Veloci continues with the introduction of the new Due Valvole at Baselworld 2012.

Meccaniche Veloci WatchesIn just five years Meccaniche Veloci has already achieved what it has taken some watchmakers decades to accomplish. This young brand has literally taken the watch world by storm. Meccaniche Veloci’s celebrated Quattro Valvole line, based on the famous four-valve racing car engines, is widely regarded as one of the most innovative new designs in recent years.

Now, Meccaniche Veloci continues its evolution as a leader in industrial design and watchmaking innovation with a brand new creation: the Meccaniche Veloci Due Valvole. This exciting new timepiece, which makes its debut at Baselworld 2012, continues the Meccaniche Veloci tradition of combining motor engineering inspiration with the highest quality craftsmanship to produce truly unique timepieces.

Meccaniche Veloci Due Valvole Debuts at Baselworld 2012

The new 44mm Due Valvole features an innovative two time zone display that allows each of the two dials to be set separately. The larger dominant dial, reserved for the primary time zone, features a date window at 3 o’clock and has indices marked with an hourly scale. The smaller secondary time zone has its indices marked with a contrasting scale of minutes.

This breakthrough design, celebrating auto racing’s many famous two-valve engines, is a marvel of understated simplicity. The Due Valvole, like the celebrated designs that came before it, uses only finest materials, assembled by master craftsmen. The strap is attached directly to the case using four titanium screws. Two titanium crowns allow each dial to be set independently, while an anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal ensures that your view will remain unobstructed. The Due Valvole is powered by a premium Swiss-made movement and is water resistant to 33 feet.

While the boldly masculine styling of a Meccaniche Veloci timepiece isn’t for everybody, these breakthrough watches have acquired a loyal following among watch aficionados. With the introduction of the new Due Valvole at Baselworld 2012, Meccaniche Veloci’s reputation for creating the ultimate in high performance timepieces can only be expected to grow.

Louis Erard Unveils New Excellence Regulator Power Reserve at Baselworld 2012

by John Sealander

Louis Erard WatchesRegulator watches have always been held in high regard by watch aficionados. The unique dial configuration, with a central minute hand and separate subdials to indicate the hours and seconds, originated with legendary clockmaker George Graham in the late eighteenth century. Grahams’s highly accurate regulator clocks were used for making astronomical observations and the special dial made it easier for astronomers to determine the exact time.

When watchmakers were finally able to transform these large observatory clocks into precision wristwatches, the design of the dial remained essentially unchanged. The master watchmakers at Louis Erard have always had a special place in their hearts for the regulator wristwatch. That’s why they are introducing a brand new regulator design at Baselworld 2012. The Louis Erard Excellence Regulator Power Reserve is a fitting addition to the brand’s outstanding Excellence Collection.

Louis Erard Unveils New Excellence Regulator Power Reserve at Baselworld 2012

These precisely crafted timepieces delicately blend horological tradition with modern design. With its exclusive “in-house” power reserve complication, the new Excellence Regulator Power Reserve watch is a testament to the company’s ongoing policy of manufacturing 100-percent mechanical, classically styled timepieces.

A hand wound ETA Calibre 7001 movement powers this spectacular 40mm timepiece. The polished stainless steel case is water resistant to 130 feet and has been fitted with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal that has been treated on both sides. The beautiful silver-tone regulator-style dial features a central minutes display with an offset hour counter. A secondary seconds display at six o’clock and the power reserve complication at nine o’clock complete the attractive dial.

Current owner Alain Spinedi has never wavered from Louis Erard and André Perret’s original concept of producing high quality and very original mechanical watches at affordable prices. With the introduction of the new Excellence Regulator Power Reserve at Baselworld, Louis Erard ensures that their well-deserved reputation for excellence remains intact.

With headquarters in Le Noirmont, Switzerland, Louis Erard timepieces are available in over 40 countries around the world.

Classically shaped dauphine-style hands make this dependable chronograph extremely readable even under the worst driving conditions. Edox understands that race drivers have enough to worry about without fears of pushing the wrong button. To eliminate unnecessary timing errors, a distinctive red “start” pusher ensures that there will be no mistakes when initiating critical timing events. The “stop” pusher on this durable and practical timepiece is shaped differently as well, for easy recognition even if you’re not looking at the watch.

Everything about this spectacular timepiece is designed for one reason: to provide reliable service under extreme conditions.
